Underdog Bronchos look to shock MSU
The Bronchos travel to Wichita Falls, Texas this Saturday night to face the No. 17 ranked team in the nation. The Mustangs are 6-2 this season. The Bronchos are 2-6 following their offensive show in their 41-23 win over SWOSU last weekend.

The Mustangs and Texas A&M- Kingsville faced off in a battle of the ranked last week and MSU stomped the No. 7 team in the nation 38-7. MSU quarterback Zack Eskridge was 24 of 24 for 245 yards and two touchdowns, and also added another on the ground. Running back Neal Carr scored two more touchdowns rushing for the Mustangs.

Too early for Javelinas to think postseason
The urge always is there to cast a look toward the overall scene, where a team is fitting into postseason picture. In NCAA Division II football, that begins and ends at the regional level. Forget the American Football Coaches Association national rankings and the weekly D2Football.com poll. Those are fine ratings for chit-chat around the water-cooler or for on-line blogging, but they mean nothing once the final whistle blows on the first Saturday in November.

With three games remaining in the regular season, things are taking shape in Super Regional Four, in which Texas A&M-Kingsville and the rest of the Lone Star Conference teams compete. On the other hand, they aren’t taking shape at all. As if the NCAA selection formula isn’t convoluted enough, there are enough scenarios that prevent anyone from being considered a lock for the playoffs.

The Javelina defense will have its hands full against the boys from Eastern New Mexico this week, especially the defensive backs. Eastern averages 511 yards of offense a game and 454 of that through the air.

However, people might argue there's more pressure on the Hoggie offense Saturday night after managing just one touchdown in 10 possessions in a 38-7 loss to Midwestern State.

Lone Star Conference runners face off for conference crown Saturday
Lone Star Conference runners will meet in Canyon on Saturday for the conference championships.

One runner who shows no evidence of hitting the wall is Tarleton State junior Jared McNeil, who leads the Texans onto the 8K course at West Texas A&M’s Horse Center. The women start at 9:30 a.m. and the men follow at 10:15. McNeil, an all-district performer at Saginaw Boswell, brings some credentials to the meet as a two-time conference runner of the week this season. McNeil started 2009 with a personal season-best time of 24 minutes, 35.12 seconds at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. That was good for 18th.
