LSC Roundup 10-5

LSC round-up: ACU still undefeated
Texas A&M-Kingsville and Abilene Christian posted victories Saturday to remain the lone two unbeaten teams in the Lone Star Conference, and Angelo State also picked up a victory to join the Javelinas and Wildcats as the last three LSC teams without a loss in conference play.

Redshirt freshman Mitchell Gale threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start as No. 2 ACU (6-0 overall, 4-0 LSC, 1-0 LSC South) breezed past winless East Central 43-6 in a LSC crossover game in Ada, Okla., on Saturday. The victory sets up a showdown between the defending LSC champs and Angelo State (5-1, 4-0, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday in a LSC South Division game in San Angelo.

Rams set to battle Abilene Christian
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Trips to Blackwater Draw, N.M., home of Eastern New Mexico Univesity, haven’t always been enjoyable experiences for the Angelo State University football team — especially recently.

In 2007, the Rams needed double-overtime to defeat the Greyhounds there. In 2005, ASU suffered its first loss of the season at Greyhound Stadium. The 2009 matchup looked like it might not go the Rams’ way either. Despite taking a 19-2 lead at halftime, the Greyhounds cut the ASU lead to 19-16 early in the fourth quarter on Saturday.

Fortunately, the Rams were able to re-establish their lead and then pull away in the game’s final minutes. With the win, ASU improved to 4-0 in LSC play for the first time since 2001 and 2-0 in South Division play for the first time since that same season.

Buffs still feeling those red-zone blues
Statistics don't tell the story for the problems plaguing the West Texas A&M offense. WT gained 370 yards Saturday night against Midwestern State, which entered the game with the best defense in the Lone Star Conference, at least on paper.

Buffs quarterback Taylor Harris was 30-of-55 for 320 yards and a touchdown and spread the ball around, hitting eight receivers. Running back Kelvin Thompson ran for 79 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. WT also was a respectable 4-of-7 on scoring chances in the red zone.

However, the primary stat that concerns the Buffs is the final score - 31-19.

Inside the numbers: The Buffs had only 50 net yards rushing and had to settle for field goals on two of their scoring opportunities.

Area college report: Oct. 5, 2009
Game balls
Trinity WR Caleb Urban totaled 148 all-purpose yards, including a 62-yard touchdown reception and a 49-yard TD run on a reverse.
A&M-Kingsville LB Jeff Edwards came up with two interceptions, seven tackles and a sack.
Incarnate Word QB Eric Massoni passed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another while guiding the Cardinals to their come-from-behind victory.

Angelo State smothers Hounds (with video)
BLACKWATER DRAW — With homecoming upon it, Eastern New Mexico suffered a power outage. Visiting Angelo State held the Greyhounds’ high-powered offense scoreless until late in the third quarter, and salted the game away with a pair of defensive touchdowns in the fourth period for a 47-23 victory Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.

Josh Neiswander threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns for Angelo State (5-1), including a 17-yard pass to V’Keon Lacey with one second left in the first half for a 19-2 advantage at the break. The Greyhounds (2-4), NCAA Division II’s second-ranked scoring offense entering the weekend, managed just a safety in the first half and lost the turnover battle 3-1.

“We didn’t play well on any side of the ball,” Greyhounds coach Mark Ribaudo said. “Our offense didn’t play well. Our defense played well in the first half and our special teams didn’t play well all night. We’re an offensive-minded football team. If our offense isn’t going it’s going to be tough all the way around.”

Waller's Brooks sounds like a perfect fit for ACU. Tell the ACU coaches to warm up the computers.

I think they (ACU coaches) would be smart enough to do his work for him in the public library this time.
