Four Finalists for Angelo State Head Football Coach Vacancy to be Available to Media
SAN ANGELO – Angelo State University Director of Athletics Kathleen Brasfield and the football head coach search committee will welcome four candidates to campus next week for final interviews. Pierce Holt, Will Wagner, Steve Warren and Todd Whitten have been identified as the finalists.
Pierce Holt
Holt is a two-time All American defensive lineman for Angelo State (1986, 1987), Holt played 8 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, twice being selected All-Pro, and at one point was the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and the LSC Hall of Honor in 2000.
Will Wagner
Wagner has been on the staff at Northwest Missouri since 1998, first as a graduate assistant for two seasons, then full-time as the secondary coach. He is still the secondary coach, and was name assistant head coach in 2007. While at Northwest Missouri, the Bearcats have won three national championships and finished as the runner-up four times. He played his college ball at Hardin Simmons, in Abilene.
Steve Warren
Warren, another former ASU player, is the head coach at Abilene High School. While at Abilene, his teams have compiled a 138-45 record, winning the 5A D-II state title in 2009. Prior to his arrival in 1996, the AHS had 8 consecutive losing seasons.
Todd Whitten
Todd Whitten is the offensive coordinator at Lamar University after previously serving as the head coach at Sam Houston State and Tarleton State. Whitten compiled a 25-28 record in 5 seasons as the head coach at Sam Houston State. He fared much better in the LSC at Tarleton State, with a 45-23 record over 6 seasons, qualifying for the playoffs twice, advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2001.
