ASU FOOTBALL: ASU names finalists for football coach - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
Angelo State University announced the four finalists for its vacant head football coaching position Thursday, one of whom is former ASU standout and NFL All-Pro Pierce Holt.

Holt joins Northwest Missouri State associate head coach and defensive backs coach Will Wagner, current Abilene High School head coach Steve Warren and former Tarleton State head coach Todd Whitten as the four finalists who will be brought in for interviews next week.

Abilene is home to two of the top five offensive linemen in small-college football.

Abilene Christian’s Trevis Turner and Hardin-Simmons’ Koby Parker were named Thursday as first-team selections on The Associated Press’ Little All-America team, composed of Division II and Division III student-athletes.


Baptiste named to Little All-American team - Corpus Christi Caller Times
The banner week for Texas A&M-Kingsville senior linebacker Tressor Baptiste continues.

The Hofstra transfer added third-team Little All-America honors from The Associated Press on Thursday. Earlier in the week, he was named to the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II first team and to the second team by Daktronics.

The Lone Star Conference Linebacker of the Year, Baptiste led the Javelinas with 40 solo tackles and three forced fumbles. Baptiste finished with 66 tackles, including eight for losses. He was part of an A&M-Kingsville defense that finished first among Division II teams rushing defense, allowing 57 yards per game.

A number of Snow College football players signed National Letters of Intent to play for four-year colleges this week as the signing period opened.

“This is a bittersweet day for us,” said Snow head coach Steve Coburn, who led the Badgers to a 10-2 season, a Top of the Mountains Bowl Victory and a number seven national ranking.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: City will host LSC crossover tourney - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
The City of San Angelo Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday that the Texas Bank Sports Complex will host the 12th Annual Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in April.

All 15 teams in the LSC that participate in softball will converge on San Angelo’s newest sports facility April 1-3. The tournament will consist of 40 games and allow teams from the North Division to play teams from the South Division.

The crossover tournament has recently been held in Durant, Okla., the home city of Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said other coaches in the conference were looking to move the tournament south from its previous sites in Oklahoma and the Metroplex. He spoke with those in charge of the Complex and helped them put a presentation together.

That presentation resulted in the tournament ending up in San Angelo.

“San Angelo is the perfect place to host this tournament,” Scott said. “Our fan base continues to grow, and San Angelo is a softball city. This is a great opportunity to showcase some great softball.”

The city of San Angelo has added another sports tournament to its repertoire thanks to its central location, moderate weather and, of course, the Texas Bank Sports Complex.

Since the multimillion-dollar sports complex opened in the middle of last year, San Angelo has hosted more than a dozen softball and baseball tournaments. That’s up from almost none the previous year.

The new tournament in town is the 12th annual Lone Star Conference Women’s Fast Pitch Crossover Tournament, which will take place at the complex for three days, April 1-3. The tournament has been hosted in Durant, Okla., the past several years. San Angelo beat out Durant, Richardson and Victoria to host the 15-team tournament.

At stake is an estimated $250,000 economic impact, according to figures from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
