'No. 1 goal' in sight for Elder, MSU - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
He has a box full of conference championship rings sitting on a shelf in his office.
He has won some kind of coach of the year award more times than even he can remember. His winning percentage is .800 — better than any active soccer coach in the NCAA. But something is still missing from Doug Elder’s soccer résumé. He has still never won the big one.
As a player at Midwestern State, Elder twice made it to the NAIA national championship game. Both times he watched guys from Simon Fraser lift the big trophy. And both times it happened on MSU’s home field. Simon Fraser beat Midwestern 4-0 for the title back in 1982, then came back here in 1983 and won 1-0.
“That first year it was cold and wet, and we played in a mud pit,” Elder recalled. “Some of our guys were sick. John Hedlund, our best player, had the flu and played sparingly. Plus, Simon Fraser is in Canada. Those guys are used to freezing cold and chipping the ball out of the water. The next year, the one goal they scored was a fluke. It was a free kick that went between my hip and the pole. It’s like we are snakebit.”
A lot changed in the 16 years between Elder’s final game as a player at MSU and his being named as the team’s head coach.
But his expectations hadn’t.

CSU Bakersfield Announces New Athletics Director - MediaNewswire
After a four-month national search that generated numerous qualified candidates, CSU Bakersfield today announced that Jeffrey Konya has been named CSUB's new athletics director, effective Jan. 8, 2011. Konya will replace longtime athletic director, Rudy Carvajal, who will retire at the end of the year.
"This is a tremendous opportunity and I am excited to be coming to CSU Bakersfield. I was very impressed by the vision that Dr. Mitchell and the athletics coaches and staff have established for the CSUB Roadrunners program. This is definitely a place where you can be successful both academically and athletically," said Konya. "We have great alumni, strong community support, and a solid recruiting base to work from."
Konya comes to CSUB from Northeastern State University ( NSU ) in Oklahoma where he has served as athletics director since late 2008. During his tenure at NSU, Konya oversaw all operational aspects of a ten-sport NCAA Division II athletic department with an estimated $4 million annual budget, more than 40 coaches and staff, and approximately 270 student-athletes.

Injury ends WT guard Unruh's season - Ricky Treon, Amarillo Globe News
West Texas A&M women's basketball star Joni Unruh will miss the rest of the Lady Buffs' season after suffering a knee injury, the team announced Tuesday.
The senior tore her left anterior cruciate ligament during practice Wednesday, and WT head athletic trainer Ron Hulsey ruled Monday her season is over.
"It changes your dynamic," WT coach Krista Gerlich said of losing the Lone Star Conference South preseason player of the year. "You just have to make some adjustments when you lose somebody that's that instrumental in everything that we do."
Unruh, a 2007 Amarillo High graduate, is expected to have surgery soon and will apply for a medical redshirt so she can play next season, WT officials said.
UCO men's basketball moves up to 8th in poll - UCO Sports Information
Unbeaten Central Oklahoma moved up two spots in the new NABC/Division II Coaches’ Poll that was released Tuesday.
The Bronchos went from 10th to No. 8 in the rankings, earning 146 points in balloting of selected head coaches from around the country. UCO has equaled the best start in school history at 7-0 and will look to break that record Thursday when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on undefeated Incarnate Word (5-0).
Defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona stayed atop the poll, earning all eight first-place votes to finish with 200 points. Findlay (Ohio) and Bellarmine (Ky.) tied for second, with Winona State (Minn.) fourth and South Carolina-Aiken fifth.
UCO is one of two Lone Star Conference teams in the rankings, with Tarleton State falling from sixth to No. 17 after suffering its first loss of the season last Saturday to Cameron.

Friday had back-to-back career high scoring nights in leading UCO to a pair of wins in its own Fairfield Inn Invitational over the weekend, averaging 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the field. The junior guard scored a career best 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting with a 3-pointer in just 26 minutes of a 91-59 rout of Oklahoma Panhandle and bettered that the next night with 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting while also tying a career-high with eight rebounds in a 92-86 win over Missouri Western. Friday scored 12 of his 24 points in the final 10 minutes as the No. 10-ranked Bronchos overcame a nine-point deficit to remain undefeated.

Brown played taller than his 6-4 frame and blocked four shots in the Lions’ wins over Texas A&M-International and St. Mary’s. He was the top rebounder for A&M-Commerce with 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in the two games.

Tracy Robinson, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, Forward, San Antonio, Texas, Sam Houston
In the lone game for Incarnate Word, Robinson led all scorers with his 22. That was his second game of 20-plus points (out of four played) and his fourth game in double figure points. His four assists were a season-high as UIW improved to 4-0 on the year.

Jessica Hanna, Texas Woman’s University, JR, Guard, China Spring, Texas, China Spring HS
In the only game last week, Hanna scored a game-high 24 points in a 76-65 win over Southern Arkansas to help the Pioneers extend their win streak to five. She finished the game shooing 9-for-13 from the floor and added five rebounds and a career-high three blocks. On the season she is averaging 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. Hanna also leads the team in blocks (4) and steals (90).
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Casi Rawls, East Central University, SR, Guard, Lawton, Okla., Elgin HS
Rawls recorded five steals to go with 19 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in East Central’s 66-62 home victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville. She had only two turnovers in the contest in 36 minutes of play.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kelsey Benford, Tarleton State University, SR, Center, Waxahachie, Texas, Waxahachie HS
Benford provided the TexAnns with 18 points and eight rebounds in Tarleton’s 59-50 win over Cameron. She dominated the post in the game, scoring 18 of the team’s 32 points in the paint on 9-of-15 shooting. Benford also played a major role in Cameron’s 32.2 percent from the field, forcing the Aggies to attempt 17 three-pointers in the game.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Victoria Gonzalez, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SO, Center, Hidalgo, Texas, Hidalgo HS
Gonzalez had an outstanding week in leading the Javelinas to a 1-1 record. First, she fought through a tough shooting performance against Our Lady of the Lake to grab a career high 22 rebounds with 13 coming on the offensive end. She led the team with 16 points and four blocks in the 63-44 win. She came back with a 13-point, 17-rebound game on the road at East Central in a 66-62 loss. The two rebounding performances were the top two in the LSC this year. She averaged 14.5 points, 19.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game for the week.
