ACU Wildcats soccer duo first to earn All-American honors - Abilene Reporter News
Abilene Christian soccer players Ashley Holton and Andrea Carpenter have earned all-America honors from Daktronics, yet another first for the Wildcats four-year-old program.
Holton, a junior, was named to the second team while Carpenter, a freshman, was chosen for the third team. They combined to score 35 goals and led ACU to a 17-4 season, its first Lone Star Conference title and first postseason appearance.
Carpenter’s 21 goals is the new ACU single-season scoring record. She had a record 46 points.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Doug Elder didn’t expect to be here this week. The Midwestern State soccer coach figured he would be home playing with his kids or maybe out doing a little early Christmas shopping. He doubted this team.
He admits it — and hears about it often because his players rag on him about it. This team is 19-0-2 — with a big emphasis on that ZERO.
They are No. 2 in the nation and headed to an NCAA Division II Final Four semifinal matchup against No. 5 Rollins College here this afternoon.
How could you not believe in these guys, coach?
“Are you kidding me? We had like seven new starters,” Elder said. “I hear other coaches talk about us having a winning attitude, that we expect to win and play with confidence. I don’t really sense it like they do, maybe because they are my boys.”

He should be coaching or working in some other profession of his choice — not batting down balls in front of some net.
Michael Wood should be in goal for Midwestern State today when the Mustangs take on Rollins College in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships.
And it’s not that Woody is better.
Herrera is the best goalkeeper in the country. The MSU senior was named Daktronics first-team All-America on Wednesday for the second year in a row.
No, Herrera shouldn’t be here mainly because he started for MSU as a true freshman back in 2005. You do the math. His senior season should have been two years ago.
“I was young, dumb and immature,” he said about flunking out of college after one semester.
So now, when the 23-year-old Herrera goes back home to Dallas and sees one of those “Second Chance” billboards, he thinks about himself.

Despite having played just five games between them, the Angelo State men’s and women’s basketball teams open Lone Star Conference crossover play tonight.
The divisional games that begin in January are more important than the crossover games, but the contests against the North Division teams will be valuable when regional rankings are compiled and possibly if tiebreakers are needed come tournament time.
The Rambelles begin tonight’s doubleheader against Texas A&M-Commerce at 5:30 p.m. The Rams will then play their first home game of the season at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a definite contrast in styles tonight in D.L. Ligon Coliseum when the Midwestern State men take on the East Central Tigers in a Lone Star Conference crossover game. And the team that gets its way will have a good shot at coming away with the win.
The women will get the hoops doubleheader started at 6 p.m., with the men’s contest set to start at 8 p.m., or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s game.
The Mustang men (4-1) will try to continue playing the up-and-down, fast-paced style that helped them get to the Elite 8 last year. The Tigers (5-1), however, will try to do just the opposite as they prefer a slower pace.
“They’re playing a grind-it-out style compared to what they did last year,” MSU head coach Grant McCasland said. “They have a new coach (Joe Redmond), and they’re not allowing people to score and are playing at a slower tempo. They’re only giving up 50-something points a game. So of course, we’ll be trying to speed it up.”

Cameron, under third-year coach Wade Alexander, has reeled off five straight wins to open the year. The biggest feather in the cap of the five a 49-44 win over then No. 6-ranked Tarleton State.
WT, under 18th-year coach Rick Cooper, has opened its season with a 4-0 record marking its best start since the 5-0 effort in 2005-06.
Unruh's loss will force Lady Buffs to step up - Ricky Treon, Amarillo Globe News
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs have had a rough couple of weeks.
It started Nov. 20 with a 93-69 loss to Fort Lewis in Durango, Colo., a game in which the Skyhawks outscored WT 56-30 in the second half.
Then the Lady Buffs found out Monday that senior guard Joni Unruh wouldn't play the rest of this season because of a torn ACL in her left knee.
WT's other senior guard, Megan McLain, has also been injured and isn't expected to play today after not practicing last week.
But No. 11 WT (2-1) will try to get back on track today with its 6 p.m. home opener against Lone Star Conference North member Cameron (1-4) at the First United Bank Center.
