ASU goal to hire new coach hits evaluation - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
According to the Angelo State University Athletic Communications Department, the search for a new head football coach for the Rams has reached the evaluation stage. This week, the Champion Search Firm will present its list of applicants to the school’s search committee. From there, a list of finalists will be formed, and they will likely be brought in for interviews.
Department director Kevin McCarty said a coach may not be named until early January. That doesn’t mean the rumors haven’t been swirling. They started the day the school announced it was not renewing Dale Carr’s contract. One name was mentioned almost immediately.
That name was Steve Warren, an ASU alumnus who led Abilene High to a state championship last year. Warren was once a student assistant at ASU, but that is the extent of his college coaching experience. He has been at Abilene High the past several years and has compiled a 156-67 record. The Eagles’ coach denied that he had even been contacted by ASU about the vacant position.
Other names that have come up include former ASU standout and NFL All-Pro Pierce Holt, former Tarleton State head coaches Sam McElroy and Todd Whitten, former ASU standout and current Abilene Christian defensive coordinator Jason Johns, former ASU standout and current Abilene Christian assistant coach Colby Carthel and McMurry head coach Hal Mumme.
One far-fetched rumor even suggested Matt Fryar, one of the assistant coaches under Carr, might be promoted to head coach and another assistant who was let go, Russell Gaskamp, might take over defensive coordinator duties.
Of course, all the names above are rumors until the search committee comes up with its short list of finalists and eventually names a new coach. But speculation is fun, so here is a quick look at the rumored names and some pros and cons with each one:

It took a last-second 3-point prayer to finally bring an end to the Angelo State University men’s basketball team’s wild triple-overtime game Wednesday against St. Mary’s.
With time winding down after nearly 55 entertaining minutes, St. Mary point guard Josh Orta heaved up a long 3-pointer over the outstretched arms of an ASU defender.
It hit nothing but net with 0.9 seconds left to play, and the Rattlers left the Junell Center with a 103-100 rollercoaster victory.

West Texas A&M men's coach Rick Cooper has one wish when his unbeaten Buffs tip off at 7 tonight against Rhema in the First United Bank Center.

Herrera, Spence, Teixeira earn NSCAA all-region honors - MSU Sports Information
Super Region 4 champion Midwestern State placed three players on the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/Performance Subaru All-South Central Region team as released Wednesday morning.
Senior goalkeeper Raul Herrera repeated the honor and was joined by senior midfielder Paulo Teixeira and junior center back Ryan Spence.
Herrera, a two-time Daktronics first-team All American, ranked second in NCAA Division II this season with a 0.552 goals against average while helping the Mustangs to their second Final Four appearance in program history.
The Dallas native closed his career with a school record 21 shutouts while notching a 31-4-7 record between the posts.
Teixeira, a two-time All-Lone Star Conference first-team performer, led the nation's No. 2 attack from the central midfield where he notched five goals and four assists.
Spence, a two-time Daktronics All American, led back line efforts while helping the Mustangs post 12 shutouts. He scored two goals and added two assists.
Midwestern State posted its second unbeaten regular season, claimed its sixth straight conference title and advanced to the NCAA II postseason for the seventh time in the last nine seasons.

Mustangs place five on NSCAA All-South Central Region squad - MSU Sports Information
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State placed four players on the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/Performance Subaru All-South Central Region first team and added another on the second squad when the organization released its postseason awards Wednesday morning.
Senior midfielder Kendra Clemons was joined by junior forward Lindsay Pritchard and sophomores Mallory Whitworth and Hanna Staley on the first team.
Clemons, a four-year starter splitting time as a center back and midfielder, is a two-time NSCAA all-region honoree claiming second-team honors last season and was a third-team selection last season.
The Odessa native closed a solid collegiate career with nine goals and 18 assists. She was a first-team Daktronics all-region performer and a four-time all-league selection.
Pritchard enjoyed a breakout campaign leading the Mustangs with 10 goals and five assists this season. The Whitehouse product was a first-team Daktronics all-region and All-LSC performer.
Whitworth earned LSC Goalkeeper of the Year accolades earlier this season after leading the conference with a 0.63 goals against average while posting eight shutouts.
Staley, a Daktronics second-team All American and LSC Defender of the Year, anchored a solid back line as the Mustangs recorded 10 clean sheets this season.
Junior striker Kelsey Hill gained second-team honors after scoring 10 goals and dishing out six assists this season.
Midwestern State claimed its first regular season LSC championship since 1998 and advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason for the first time in school history. The Mustangs finished an historic season with a 16-4 record.

Furness named 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Central Region First Team Selection - WTAM Sports Information
Dominic Furness (Jr-2L, Middlesbrough, England) was named a 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Central Region first team selection as announced by the organization last Tuesday. The buffaloes ended the season with a record of 11-6-1 overall and 4-4 in the LSC.
Dominic Furness became a powerful member of the Buffs offense during his junior season, netting 10 goals (two game winners) and lending five assists for a total of 25 points. The junior mid went 3-for-3 in successful penalty kick conversions. With 26 of 39 shots on target, Furness recorded a shot on goal percentage of .667. Furness picked up LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring a trio of goals against Eastern New Mexico and Northeastern State including two successful penalty kicks.
