“I really felt like whatever they got, we were responsible for it. Our phones were out the entire time and a couple times the defensive calls got in late. That’s what happened on that long touchdown. I don’t even know if we were on the same page. But we made way too many mistakes.
“It really hurt that we couldn’t run like I thought we could. But not being able to pass (50 yards) really hurt that. They’re a good football team and we knew that coming in. But I really thought we could win. I don’t think we quit — they just beat us.”
“We had a lot of injuries this year and that really hurt. We Band-Aided the defense together all season. But we went 8-3 and we played in the postseason. There are a lot of teams that would like to have had the season we did.”

The Midwestern State Mustangs knew that Washburn wide receiver Joe Hastings was good coming into the Lower Kanza Bowl.
Saturday, the sixth-year senior proceeded to show them just how good.
Hastings caught 10 passes for 223 yards, and a score and the Ichabods broke the game wide open with a 21-point third quarter to beat the Mustangs 45-14 in front of 3,500 fans in Weaver-Ervin Stadium at Hummer Sports Park.
The loss brings the Mustangs’ 2010 season to a close with an 8-4 record, while Washburn finishes with the same 8-4 mark. The win also gave the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association a 4-0 sweep over the Lone Star Conference in postseason play.
Hastings, who received a sixth year of eligibility after he blew out his knee in the second game of the 2009 season, was named the game’s Outstanding Player for the Ichobods. Freshman defensive back Neiko Conway, whose interception return set up the Mustangs’ first score, won the award for MSU.
“We knew going in that their quarterback (Dane Simoneau) was good and that he (Hastings) was like Andy Tanner,” MSU head coach Bill Maskill said comparing him to the former MSU receiver who had a record-setting season in 2009. “We knew he would make some catches — and boy, did he. He made some great catches on some balls he shouldn’t even have caught. You just have to give him credit. In the first half they got two scores on two big plays and the second one helped them take control. We still kept fighting. But all the penalties — we had way too many — and the big plays they made were hard for us to overcome. Give them credit for that.”

TOPEKA, Kan. - Midwestern State's Ryan Craven became the school's all-time leading tackler midway through the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon at the Lower, Inc. Kanza Bowl.
And freshman cornerback Neiko Conway was tabbed the most outstanding player for the Mustangs after returning an interception for 51 yards to set up a score.
That would be a summation of the MSU's highlights as Washburn (Kan.) rolled to a 45-14 victory at Hummer Sports Park.
Led by a deadly pass-and-catch combination of Dane Simoneau-to-Joe Hastings, the Ichabods piled up 520 total yards of total offense including 361 through the air and 159 on the ground. The total was the most yielded by the MSU defense this season. Simoneau completed 18-of-26 passes for 350 yards including three touchdowns, but Hastings was easily the favorite target. The senior from Wichita, Kan. was named Washburn's player of the game after making 10 receptions for 223 yards including a 74-yard score to open scoring in the first quarter.
Hastings' output was just the fourth time an opponent has accumulated 200 receiving yards against MSU. It was the most since Abilene Christian's Robb Spells had nine catches for 203 yards in 2005 and Howard Payne's Dale Joseph (10 receptions, 260 yards) is the only receiver to top the performance.
The Ichabods pushed the advantage to 10-0 on a 31-yard field goal by Steve Ivanisevic early in the second quarter. Conway set up Midwestern's first score of the game when he intercepted Simoneau and returned the ball 51 yards to the Washburn 8-yard line. Three plays later, Lester Bush burst in from 4 yards out to pull the Mustangs to within 10-7.
It was all Washburn from then on. Simoneau connected with Tore Hurst for a 19-yard TD connection 33 seconds before halftime as the Ichabods would score on each of their next four possessions to push the advantage to 38-7 on the second of Vershon Moore's two touchdown rushes in the third quarter. The Mustangs would answer with a with a Keidrick Jackson 2-yard plunge to begin the fourth quarter. Even then, Washburn responded with a 4-yard TD run to close out the scoring with 11:01 to play.
Washburn limited the Mustangs to their second lowest offensive output of the season at 246 yards, while Midwestern permitted a season-high 520 total yards to the Ichabods. Brandon Kelsey, who was making his second start at quarterback for injured 2009 Harlon Hill finalist Zack Eskridge, paced a 196-yard rushing day for MSU with 70 yards on 13 carries. Senior Marcus Mathis used a 27-yard rush in the fourth quarter to move past Ross Harrison (2,418 yards from 2003-06) into third place on MSU's all-time rushing chart. The Rockwall High product finishes his career with 2,433 rushing yards. Bush chipped in 52 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
Kelsey was limited to 10-of-29 passing for 50 yards including two interceptions as the Mustangs were held under 100 passing yards for the third straight game. Craven led the Mustangs' defensive effort with six tackles to finish with 267 career stops which is one more than Teddy Martyniuk, who made 266 tackles from 1988-91.
Midwestern State closes the season with an 8-4 mark as the Mustangs have now posted 11 consecutive winning campaigns.

MSU finishes 17th in snowy course - Times Record News
Midwestern State struggled through snow and mud for a 17th-place showing in the NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday afternoon at E.P. Sawyer State Park.
“They were slipping and sliding,” MSU coach Koby Styles said. “We were just a bit out of our element. Yesterday, it was perfect with the temperature around 40-45 degrees. The race would have been a different race had we run yesterday.”

Abilene Christian’s men finished 15th and Midwestern State’s women placed 17th in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.

Amos Sang paced the Wildcats finishing 9th in the field of 182 runners with a time of 31:10.5 over the 8-kilometer course. He was followed by teammates Romain Rybicki (53rd, 31:55.5) and Cleophas Tanui (91st, 32:33.1).
Sydnee Cole led the Mustangs placing 80th in the group of 187 runners with a time of 23:08.40. Ashley Flores (99th, 23:26.40) and Brissia Montalvo (100th, 23:27.20) were just behind her.
ACU’s Anais Belledant finished 65th competing as an individual in the women's race. She covered the 6k course in 22:51.6.
Adams State (Colo.) claimed the national team championship with a score of 57 while Western State (Colo.) (102), Grand Valley State (135), Colorado Mines (161) and Chico State (Calif.) (181) rounded out the top five on the men’s side.
Queens (N.C.) senior Michael Crouch crossed the line first with a time of 30:43.2 to earn the men’s individual national title.
On the women’s side, the top five included Grand Valley State, who claimed the national team title with a score of 66, followed by Western State (Colo.) (95), Adams State (Colo.) (98), Shippensburg (Pa.) (114) and Chico State (Calif.) (164).
Shippensburg junior Neely Spence raced to earn the women’s individual national title with a time of 20:41.20.

Three Mustangs earn first-team All-American honors - Times Record News
Midwestern State placed three players on the Daktronics All America first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSiDA) Friday afternoon.
The trio includes senior goalkeeper Raul Herrera, junior defender Ryan Spence and junior midfielder Nathan Fitzgerald who helped the Mustangs to their second trip to the NCAA Division II national semfinals and recorded the program’s second unbeatean regular season.
Herrera earned top goalkeeper honors for the second-straight year after limiting the opposition to a 0.55 goals against average and notching eight shutouts.
The Dallas native closes his career with a 31-4-7 mark between the posts with a school-record 21 shutouts.
Spence, a third-teamer in 2009, played a central role in NCAA Division II’s second-best defense. The Mustangs limited the opposition to a team goals against average of 0.51 while posting 12 clean sheets.
The junior from Decatur scored two goals and assisted two others from his center back position.
Fitzgerald garnered top honors after scoring five goals and dishing out four assists for the nation’s No. 2 offensive attack from the center mid position.
