LSC Baseball Quick Notes
Lone Star Conference action took place last week despite the cold weather and snow. Abilene Christian, Cameron, Eastern New Mexico, Northeastern State and East Central jumped to the top of the standings by winning their respective series.
LSC Baseball teams are 44-34 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 3-0 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 3-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Teams are competing for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.
Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Travis Latz, Abilene Christian, Sr., Outfield / DH, Tomball, Texas/Tomball HS
Latz led the ACU offensive attack last weekend against Central Oklahoma as the Wildcats took three of four games from the Bronchos. ... The senior outfielder / designated hitter collected 10 hits in 17 at-bats, hit three home runs and drove in seven runs as ACU scored 49 runs in four games. ... In the Wildcats’ 12-1 win on Sunday, Latz was 3 for 5 with three RBI, a double and a home run, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. ... In the second game of Monday’s doubleheader split, Latz was 4 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored in the Wildcats’ 20-6 victory. ... In ACU’s school-record 13-run third-inning output, Latz had a home run and single and scored two runs.
Alex Lyons, Cameron, Sr., Left Field, Orem, Utah/University of San Francisco
Lyons had an absolutely phenomenal week as he led the #28 Aggies to a 3-1 road series victory over #18 Angelo State. Not only did he hit for the weekend cycle, Lyons knocked in a team-high 10 RBI on a team-high 10 hits. His offensive production was key to CU’s 45 runs over four games. Lyons also recorded a team-high 3 doubles and the Black and Gold’s only triple. His 1 stolen base was one of CU’s 3 total. While Lyons only had 1 home run, he had a number of balls bounce off of the top of the wall on Friday when the wind was blowing in.
PITCHER
Cameron Aspaas, Abilene Christian, Sr., Pitcher, San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS
Aspaas was dominant in his start Sunday afternoon against Central Oklahoma, giving up just one hit through seven innings of work. ... The Bronchos only got one runner past first base against Aspaas, who only walked one batter and struck out two Bronchos. ... Aspaas needed only 76 pitches to work through seven innings.
Mike Ramirez, Tarleton State, Jr., Right-handed Pitcher, Gallup, N.M./Gallup
Ramirez showed one of the most gutsiest performances ever by a pitcher in Stephenville on Monday. The Texans were up 6-0 against visiting Northeastern State, with one out in the top of the sixth inning when Ramirez was struck in the back of the head from a line drive. Ramirez laid on the ground for a few moments, but later got back up to his feet - walked it off and got the next five outs to earn his first complete-game shutout of the season. The junior transfer out of Lamar CC went the full 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and striking out seven to earn the only shutout thrown in the Lone Star Conference this weekend. Following the win, Ramirez now either leads the LSC or is tied at the top in ERA (0.00), IP (12.0), wins (2) and strikeouts (15).
