Lone Star Conference Baseball weekly release (02/24/10)

LSC Baseball Quick Notes
Lone Star Conference action continued last week.

LSC Baseball teams are 66-55 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 3-0 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

Teams are competing for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.

Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Blake Gentry, Southeastern Oklahoma, So., Outfielder, Pocola, Okla./Pocola HS
Gentry continued his hot hitting, batting .600 for the weekend in a 3-1 series victory over Northeastern State in conference play. Gentry collected at least two-hits in each game, going 9-of-15 on the weekend. He scored four runs and added three RBI. Gentry slugged .733 for the week and posted an on base percentage of .625. He also added a sacrifice hit and a pair of stolen bases. He has reached base safely in all 11 games this season, doing so by hit in all but one.

Jason Morriss, Angelo State, Sr., Shortstop, Brisbane, Australia/Marsden State H.S.
Morriss hit .500 with a home run a three doubles as the Rams took 3-of-4 games from Tarleton State over the weekend. Morriss went 6-of-12 from the plate with five runs scored,five RBI and drawing four walks as ASU evened is LSC record. He hit safely in all four games, picking up multiple-hit games twice. In Friday’s second game 18-6 win over the Texans, Morriss went 2-for-4 from the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. He hit his first home run of the season in Saturday’s 4-3 win in the series finale.

PITCHER
Anthony Smith, Eastern New Mexico, Jr., RHP, Palms, Calif./Cal State-Stanislaus
Smith held 19th-ranked Cameron scoreless over 4.1 innings, limiting the Aggies to two singles and a .143 batting average. He picked up two saves during the series, helping the Greyhounds earn a crucial split in a Lone Star Conference road series.

Heath Wyatt, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., Pitcher, Searcy, Ark./Searcy HS
Wyatt saved all three wins that Southeastern earned over Northeastern State. He made three multi-inning appearances, going 3.0 innings in game one along with 2.1 and 2.0 in games three and four, respectively. In his 7.1 innings of work he struck out five hitters and allowed three hits and no runs, holding hitters to a .130 average. Wyatt has now appeared in eight of SE’s 11 games and collected five saves total.
