Coaches recall Hall-of-Famer Randle's stellar collegiate career
The buzz started during the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball game Saturday and spread like wildfire within minutes.
In this age of instant communication, it didn’t take long for fans to confirm the news: Former Javelinas defensive end John Randle was among the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010.
“At the coffee shops and all through the town, that’s what everybody has been talking about,” said Fred Nuesch, who was sports information director at Texas A&I/Texas A&M-Kingsville for 35 years before retiring in 2003. “People are saying what a great honor it is for John and A&M-Kingsville. They’re pretty proud.”
Randle, who played 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and three with the Seattle Seahawks before retiring in 2004, will be the third Javelina to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, joining the late Eugene Upshaw and Darrell Green.
That a small school in deep South Texas would have that many Hall of Famers is nothing short of remarkable and a testament to its rich football tradition.
“It’s just an amazing thing,” said Ron Harms, who was the Javelinas’ head coach when Green and Randle played for them. “I think of how fortunate I was to be able to be associated with that caliber of athlete.”
Richard Cundiff, an assistant coach at Warren High School, was defensive coordinator at A&I during Randle’s two seasons with the Javelinas.
“You couldn’t ask for someone who played harder on every play,” Cundiff said Tuesday. “Off the field, he was a quiet guy. But when he put that helmet on, he became a special player. His motor ran hot every second he practiced. There were times we had to hold him out of drills because he was so quick that he disrupted plays before they started.”

WOU picks new athletic director to focus on fundraising
Daniel Hare has been named athletic director at Western Oregon.
Hare, currently the director of athletic compliance at Central Oklahoma, will take over for Jon Carey by May 1.
Carey has served in the position since 1993, a period that included the shift of the Wolves' athletic programs from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
"Daniel Hare is familiar with virtually every aspect of the athletic director's job," WOU president John Minahan said. "He is smart, energetic and knows a major part of his time will be (spent) fundraising. He is ready to take on this job."
