LSC Basketball Quick Notes
After four weeks of divisional play, just one men’s team - Central Oklahoma - has a perfect record in conference play.
Teams are competing for one of 16 spots, eight on both the men’s and women’s side, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Bartlesville, Okla., March 3-7.
The LSC men have a 172-131 overall record so far this season, including a 91-61 mark in the South Division and 81-70 in the North. In league crossover play the South has the advantage, 27-22. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 24-11 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Players of the Week
NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
William Slones, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., Center, Orlando, Fla./Maynard Evans HS
Slones averaged a double-double for the week and helped Southeastern to a Rivalry Week sweep of East Central. Slones averaged 18.0 points, turning in 19 points in the midweek contest, and finishing the week with 17. He also averaged 12.0 rebounds. He dished out 3.0 assists per game to go with his 4.0 blocks per contest and 2.0 steals. He shot 70.6 percent from the field and hit the game-winning free throws with five second left in overtime to win at ECU.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Dauntae Williams, Central Oklahoma, Jr., Guard, Missouri City, Texas/Elkins
Williams had another dominating performance in UCO’s only game of the week, an 84-50 rout of Northeastern State. The junior guard had the first triple-double since 1991 for the Bronchos with 10 points, 10 rebounds (eight defensive) and 10 assists while adding three steals and blocking one shot. UCO limited the RiverHawks to 29.6 percent shooting from the field in winning its 13th straight game.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Craig Green, Midwestern State, Sr., Guard, Keller, Texas/Keller HS
Green poured in a career-high 33 points to lead No. 7 Midwestern State to a 72-69 win to give the Mustangs a sweep of Tarleton State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The senior guard from Keller scored 20 second-half points including 17 of MSU’s 22 points in the final 8 1/2 minutes as the Mustangs overcame an eight-point deficit to claim sole possession of the LSC South Division lead. Green canned six 3-pointers on his way to a 10 of 15 shooting performance while hitting seven of his nine charity tosses. He scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds in the Mustangs’ 66-49 win over the Texans Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym. Green averaged 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 6 of 12 (50 percent) from the field including a 6 of 12 (50 percent) performance from beyond the arc for the week.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Bijan Dotson, West Texas A&M, Sr., Forward, Oakland, Calif./Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton HS
Dotson registered his third-double-double of the season when he netted 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds (eight defensive) in the Buffaloes’ 67-49 win over Eastern New Mexico. That contest also saw him block a season-high, and tie a career-high, with three blocked shots to go with a pair of steals. His efforts helped WT hold ENMU to just 21.7 percent shooting from the field, the lowest percentage allowed by the Buffs this season.

The LSC women are 176-144 overall, with a 93-59 mark in the South and 83-85 in the North this season. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 38-18 record over its North opponents. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 25-11 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-4 against the MIAA.

NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jordan Stark, Central Oklahoma, Jr., Guard, Weatherford, Okla./Weatherford
Stark helped lead UCO to three big LSC North Division wins last week, averaging 17.0 points and 7.3 rebounds a game while shooting 51.7 percent (15 of 29) from the field, 50.0 percent (8 of 16) from 3-point range and 81.3 percent (13 of 16) from the line. The junior guard made 7 of 9 shots -- including five 3-pointers -- in scoring 19 points during a 77-74 win over Northeastern State, had 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a 96-93 double-overtime win over Texas Woman’s and finished with 11 points in a 74-69 victory over TWU. Stark made five free throws in the final 2:15 of the second OT to lift the Bronchos past TWU in the first meeting of the week between the two teams.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Cristina Yarbrough, Central Oklahoma, Sr., Guard, Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe
Yarbrough played a key defensive role as UCO picked up three close wins in LSC North Division showdowns against Northeastern State and Texas Woman’s. The senior guard averaged 4.3 rebounds (3.7 defensive) and 2.3 steals while adding 9.7 points and 6.3 assists as the Bronchos improved to 7-1 in league play. Yarbrough had six rebounds (five defensive), five steals, 15 points and six assists in a 77-74 win over Northeastern State, dished out eight assists, had two defensive rebounds and made one steal despite fouling out in just 20 minutes of a 96-93 double-overtime win over Texas Woman’s and then ended the week with five rebounds (four defensive), five assists, one steal and 14 points in a 74-69 win over TWU.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kayla Naylor, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., Point Guard, Corpus Christi, Texas/Calallen
Naylor led the Javelinas to a 1-1 week as they split two games with Abilene Christian. First, she had 18 points, six rebounds and three steals in the 59-55 loss at ACU. On Saturday, she came back with 18 points and six assists. She sparked a 16-2 run in the second half to break open a tie game. She hit a jumper and a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to score the first five points of the run. The 18 points in each game was her career high.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Ceciley Johnson, West Texas A&M, Sr., Center, Berkeley, Calif.
Johnson was strong on the defensive side of the court in the Lady Buffs’ two wins over Eastern New Mexico. She led the team in rebounds with 15, averaging 7.5 boards per game. 14 of those boards were on the defensive side of the court. Johnson had a game-leading nine rebounds in the second game against the Zias, leading the Lady Buffs to outrebound Eastern 44-38. In addition to her strong defensive play, Johnson shot 35.3 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. She also contributed two assists and a block.

Harvey Martin Inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame
On Monday night, former Texas A&M University-Commerce standout Harvey Martin was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2009.
Former Hog Selected to Pro Football Hall of Fame
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Former Vikings defensive tackle John Randle was selected to the Hall of Fame on Saturday in the Class of 2010.
"It's an unbelievable feeling because of where I came from and what it took to just make it in the NFL," Randle said by phone from his home in Medina. "Words can't describe what it means. I'm in the Hall of Fame!"
Randle collected 137.5 sacks during his career and was named All-Pro six times with seven Pro Bowl appearances. He was a member of the the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s.
Signed by the Vikings in 1990 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas A&I, Randle played 14 seasons (13 as a starter) and became the NFL’s all-time sack leader among defensive tackles. His 137.5 sacks rank tied for sixth among all players in league history. He had 114 as a member of the Vikings, third most in team history.
“We are extremely proud today that John has been selected as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010,” Vikings Owner and Chairman Zygi Wilf said in a statement. “As an undrafted rookie free agent, John’s hard work and perseverance paid off as he became one of the greatest defensive linemen to play the game. We look forward to having John enshrined in Canton, and we are grateful for his part in Minnesota Vikings history.”
