Lone Star Conference Softball Weekly Release (02/23/10)

LSC Softball Quick Notes
Non-conference play continued for Lone Star Conference teams last week.

LSC softball teams are 91-64 overall, with a 48-41 mark in the South and 43-23 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 32-18 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 14-9 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

Teams are competing for one of eight spots, four from both the North and South Division, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Seguin, Texas, May 6-7-8.

Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Leslie Martini, Cameron, Fr., Outfield, Moore, Okla./Moore HS
Martini had a phenomenal week at the plate for the Cameron Aggie softball team, who participated in the ACU Invitational over the weekend. Martini was named to the All-Tournament Team, and her three home runs and eight RBI led all participants. Her amazing 1.100 slugging percentage is evidence of Martini’s impressive work at the dish, as 7 of her 9 hits were either doubles or home runs. Her solo home run in the tournament opener versus No. 17 Abilene Christian proved to be the winning run in CU’s biggest victory thus far this season.

NORTH PITCHER
Katie Petersen, Midwestern State, Sr., Pitcher, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS
Petersen delivered her second career perfect game in a 1-0 win over Western New Mexico Friday afternoon in the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational, and then followed up with a three-hit shutout of No. 22 West Texas A&M on Saturday. The Plano product needed just 95 pitches to post 11 strikeouts while retiring each of the 21 batters she faced to post MSU’s first 7-inning perfect game in school history. Petersen had fanned 13 batters in a 5 inning, 15-0 run rule at Southwestern Oklahoma on March 3, 2009. She bounced back for her for 26th-career shutout while posting 10 more strikeouts in a 4-0 win over West Texas A&M. Petersen overtook former standout Brittany Willson (68 wins, 2004-06) for the most wins in program history as she improved to 69-30.

SOUTH HITTER
Kristen Cruickshank, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., Pitcher/1B, Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley HS
Cruickshank hit safely in four of Eastern’s five games last week, including two multiple-hit games. In Saturday’s win over Northeastern State, she hit 3-for-7 with two runs scored and six runs batted in. In the 12th inning of that game, she snapped a nine-all tie with a three-run homer. She also appeared in four games as a pitcher, striking out nine batters over 12 innings.

SOUTH PITCHER
Kimberly Crouse, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., Pitcher/OF, Round Rock, Texas/Hill College
Crouse posted a 2-1 record for the week, including the Zias first win over Central Oklahoma since the 2003 season. She tossed five scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out two, while turning in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Crouse also tossed five one-hit innings in a victory over Northeastern State.
