Lone Star Conference softball weekly release (02/16/10)

LSC Softball Quick Notes
Due to cold weather and snow only five Lone Star Conference teams were able to play last week. The teams got in 17 games, while 40 contests were cancelled.

Four teams - Central Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Angelo State and Texas Woman’s - remain undefeated in 2010.

LSC softball teams are 48-34 overall, with a 34-21 mark in the South and 14-13 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 24-11 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-0 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

Teams are competing for one of eight spots, four from both the North and South Division, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Seguin, Texas, May 6-7-8.

Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Tori Joyner, Southwestern Oklahoma, Fr., SS, Mustang, Okla./Mustang
Joyner went three-for-five in her collegiate debut for Southwestern Oklahoma in their doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle. Joyner played shortstop and did not make an error in seven chances while sparkling at the plate.

NORTH PITCHER
Kristina Davis, Southwestern Oklahoma, So., P, Piedmont, Okla./Piedmont
Davis was dominating on the 2010 debut on the mound. She allowed only one hit through six shutout innings in SWOSU’s 8-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle. She struck out three and walked four batters. No Aggie runner reached beyond second base in the game.

CO-SOUTH HITTER
Alix Dean, Angelo State, Jr., Second Base, Collinsville, Texas/Collinsville H.S.
Dean hit a mammoth .714 as she helped the Rambelles to a perfect 5-0 mark over the weekend at the ASU Blue & Gold Classic. Dean was 10-for-14 from the plate with four doubles and nine RBI as No. 19-ranked ASU improved to 10-0 on the young season. She hit safely in all five games, going 3-for-3 twice during the event, as she boasted a 1.000 slugging percentage. Against Incarnate Word Saturday, Dean was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of doubles. She was also 3-for-3 with three RBI against Texas A&M International Sunday. Dean also boasted a 1.000 fielding percentage, going errorless in 16 total chances.

Sarah Blair, West Texas A&M, So., P/DH, Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor
Blair helped lead the Lady Buffs to the Angelo State Blue & Gold Classic Championship this past weekend, driving in 10 runs including three homers to improve the WT record to 6-4 on the season. She was named the tournament MVP. Against Washburn, Blair went 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers and six RBI as the Lady Buffs won, 16-7.

SOUTH PITCHER
Chelsea Nelson, Angelo State, Sr., Pitcher, Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S.
Nelson went 3-0 in the circle with a 2.14 earned run average at the ASU Blue & Gold Classic over the weekend. Nelson picked up a complete-game victory over Washburn Saturday, downed Texas A&M International Sunday and came in relief the win over Texas-Permian Basin Monday. Nelson tossed 16.1 innings and gave up five earned runs on just 13 hits. She fanned 10 hitters while issuing eight walks.
