LSC Basketball Quick Notes
Seven teams have clinched berths in the LSC Championship with two weeks of games remaining. On the men's side, Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Midwestern State and Tarleton State have secured a spot, while women's teams include NSU, UCO and Southeastern Oklahoma.
Teams are competing for one of 16 spots, eight on both the men’s and women’s side, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Bartlesville, Okla., March 3-7.
Only one men’s team - Central Oklahoma - remains undefeated in conference play.
The LSC men have a 184-143 overall record so far this season, including a 97-67 mark in the South Division and 87-76 in the North. In league crossover play the South has the advantage, 27-22. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 24-11 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 190-158 overall, with a 99-65 mark in the South and 91-93 in the North this season. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 38-18 record over its North opponents. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 25-11 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-4 against the MIAA.
In men’s games played last week, the LSC had one player score more than 30 points, nine over the 20-point mark and 10 double-digit rebounders, while nine recorded double-doubles.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Brian Singleton, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Guard, Ama, La./Jones County CC
Singleton led Lions with 18 points and six assists in 77-60 win over East Central and followed that up with a team-best 20 points in the 81-71 win over Southeastern Oklahoma. He has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 11 games. The junior averaged 19 points per game last week, nearly five above his average.

SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Stavon Williams, Angelo State, Sr., Guard, Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt H.S.
Williams was key in both of the Rams’ wins last week as they inched closer to a third straight LSC Championship berth. He averaged 21 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point range. Williams scored a season-high 28 points Saturday as he and teammate LaMarshall Corbett sparked the Rams to the come-from-behind victory at Abilene Christian. The duo combined for 58 points in the game, 41 of which came in the second half. Williams scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half, hitting four treys in the half, as ASU erased a 12-point halftime deficit to upend its longtime rival. Williams added a double-double performance Wednesday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, scoring 14 points and grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds in a 23-point win. On the week, Williams added 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Johnny Barnes, Angelo State, Sr., Forward, Astoria, N.Y./Bryant H.S.
Barnes nearly averaged a double-double as he helped spark the Rams to two big wins last week. Barnes averaged nine points and 15.5 rebounds per game as ASU picked up wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville and Abilene Christian. He recorded his fourth double-double of the season in the 23-point home win over TAMUK Wednesday, scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds. He then scored nine points and pulled down 18 rebounds, tying a career best, in a 15-point win at ACU Saturday. Barnes added 2.5 blocked shots and 1.5 assists per game as he shot 47 percent from the field. He averaged 12 defensive rebounds per game.
NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Ashley Beckley, Central Oklahoma, Jr., Forward, Turpin, Okla./Turpin
Beckley averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 rebounds a game while shooting 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field in leading UCO to a pair of North Division games. The junior forward scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field in a 74-65 road win over Southwestern Oklahoma, then came back with another 20-point outing while adding eight rebounds in an 87-66 home victory against Cameron. Beckley was the leading scorer in both games as the Bronchos stretched their winning streak to eight straight.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jessica Durr, Texas Woman’s, Sr., G, Plano, Texas/Plano
Averaged 8.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in two games last week. Led the team in rebounds in both games with 9 (6 defensive) against Cameron and 12 (10 defensive) against Southwestern Oklahoma. Five of Durr’s 10 defensive rebounds came in the final six minutes against SWOSU. Down by eight points, the Pioneers closed out the game on a 17-1 run to capture an eight-point win against the Bulldogs and snap a three-game losing streak. Durr also added five steals against Southwestern Oklahoma.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Megan McLain, West Texas A&M, Jr., Guard, Channing, Texas
McLain was consistent last week in the Lady Buffs’ wins over Midwestern State and Tarleton State. She led the team in offensive production in the two games combined with 34 points, scoring 17 points in each game. She also led the team in assists with eight. McLain’s standout performance came from the free throw line as she hit 15 of 16 free throws for a 93.8 percent accuracy. She was 9-9 from the free throw line against Tarleton, which included a couple of game-clinching free shots. McLain also contributed five rebounds and two steals for the week.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Joni Unruh, West Texas A&M, Jr., Guard, Amarillo, Texas
Unruh continues to show strength on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court. Defensively, Unruh grabbed five rebounds and a team-leading nine steals. Unruh leads the LSC and Lady Buffs in steals, totaling 74 and averaging 2.8 per game. She also performed well offensively, totaling 28 points. Against Tarleton, Unruh led the team in scoring and rebounds with her fourth double-double outing of the season with 19 points and 10 boards. She also grabbed five of her nine steals against the TexAnns.
