MHHS adds pair to interview list
The Mountain Home High School head football
search committee has added two applicants to its
initial list for interviews.
According to MHHS Athletics Director and
committee chairperson Janet Wood, Ty Trahan of
Hattiesburg, Miss., and Ken Collums of Abilene,
Texas, will be interviewed, increasing the total
number to six.
The men were added after phone calls were returned
to committee members after the weekend.

Harvey Martin Classic
Texas A&M University-Commerce has announced that the 2010 Harvey Martin
Classic will take place on September 11th at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The
game will match A&M-Commerce against Angelo State University with kickoff at
5 p.m.
This marks the third-annual event to recognize the former East Texas State
and Dallas Cowboys standout, Harvey Martin, who was inducted on Monday into
the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Martin was inducted into the university¹s Hall of Fame in 1987 and selected
an Associated Press Little, Football News and NAIA All-American en route to
leading the Lions to a national title as a senior in 1972.
Both A&M-Commerce and Angelo State are members of the NCAA Division II and
the Lone Star Conference.
A&M-Commerce president Dr. Dan Jones is excited about the annual event. ³The
Harvey Martin Classic has quickly become an annual tradition for Lions
football. It has provided a great opportunity for our student-athletes to
play in a venue that is steeped in history, and has also given our 30,000 -
plus alumni in the DFW Metroplex a chance to reconnect and experience that
lifelong sense of Lion Pride. The Harvey Martin Classic just gets bigger and
better each year."
³We are excited to be playing in our third Harvey Martin Classic with our
third opponent from the Lone Star Conference Angelo State. It has been and
continues to be a great university event. It also continues to be an
opportunity to reach out to our alumni and the Dallas/Fort Worth community
with the luncheon, golf tournament and tailgate,² said A&M-Commerce athletic
director Carlton Cooper.
³I thank Carlton Cooper for bringing this event to the University,² said
Texas A&M-Commerce head football coach Guy Morriss. I feel it is a special
privilege our coaches, our student-athletes and me to participate in this
annual event.²
³We are delighted about the opportunity to play in the Cotton Bowl, one of
the most storied gridiron venues in Texas and in the nation. We think this
is a great opportunity not only to give our many alumni in the Metroplex an
opportunity to support the Rams locally but also to partner with
A&M-Commerce to showcase Lone Star Conference football in the region,² said
Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, Angelo State University president.
Angelo State athletic director Kathleen Brasfield, who currently serves as
the chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council noted that her
university is proud to be a part of the event. ³We are looking forward to
partnering with A&M-Commerce in 2010 for the Harvey Martin Classic in the
Cotton Bowl, and for all the activities surrounding that event. It¹s a
great opportunity for former Rams and `Belles in the area to get together
and enjoy LSC football. ASU athletics, band, ROTC, development office and
alumni association are planning together to make it an eventful and
memorable weekend. We hope our alums in the Dallas area will mark their
calendars and that others will begin their travel plans for the Rams and

³Almost a fourth of the players on our team are from high schools within an
hour of the Cotton Bowl. This will be a great chance for their high school
coaches and family and friends to see them play. I hope this game becomes a
tradition between our two schools and that we can play in the Cotton Bowl
each year,² said Angelo State University head coach Dale Carr.
³This is a very valuable event to not only both Texas A&M
University-Commerce and Angelo State but to also to our conference,² said
Stan Wagnon, commissioner of the Lone Star Conference. ³We stand to gain
from this event through the hard work of both institutions, and are pleased
to provide our support to this event.²

LSC Baseball Quick Notes
I The 2010 season began on February 1 and after one week of action four teams - Abilene Christian, Southeastern Oklahoma, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas - are undefeated. Cameron, Central Oklahoma and East Central have yet to play after their openers were cancelled.
I Conference play starts this week and for the third year, LSC teams will play an 11-week, single round-robin schedule with a four-game series against every other team. Each series consists of a 7-inning game followed by a 9-inning game on both days.
I LSC Baseball teams are 20-10 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 1-0 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 3-0 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
I Teams are competing for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.
Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Chris Adamson, Angelo State, Sr., Catcher, Sydney, Australia/Model Farms H.S.
Adamson led the Rams from the plate, hitting .591 as No. 18-ranked Angelo State opened the season 4-2. Adamson was 13-of-24 with a double and a home run as the Rams took 3-of-4 from Ouachita Baptist over the weekend and split with NAIA No. 1-ranked Lubbock Christian Tuesday. He had two four-hit games against OBU, going 4-for-4 with two RBI in the season opener Saturday and 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored in the series finale Sunday. In the doubleheader with LCU, Adamson was 4-for-6 with two RBI. He reached base in all six games for the Rams, earning hits in five of six outings.
Cameron Bankston, Abilene Christian, Jr., Outfielder / Catcher, Burleson, Texas/Burleson HS
In three games, Bankston played both in right field and at catcher for the Wildcats. ... He had the game-winning RBI in two games and saved one game for the Wildcats with his arm. ... In the second game of Saturday’s ACU doubleheader sweep, Bankston had the game-winning RBI in a 6-5 victory. ... But it was play in the top of the seventh that saved the win for ACU. ... With two outs and a runner on second, Bankston threw out the potential game-tying run at the plate to end the game and give ACU the 6-5 win. ... In the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Harding, Bankston drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.
PITCHER
Taylor Taska, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Fr., Pitcher, Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood
Taska pitched in relief in two games for the Javelinas. In his collegiate debut he pitched a perfect inning against UH-Victoria with one strikeout. On Tuesday, he pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief against #20 Incarnate Word to close out a 6-4 victory. He allowed three hits and two walks in the game, but induced two double plays, including a game ending double play in the ninth inning.
Heath Wyatt, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., Pitcher, Searcy, Ark./Searcy HS
Wyatt picked up a pair of saves to help Southeastern to a three-game sweep of Southwest Baptist on opening weekend. Wyatt appeared twice and pitched 3.2 innings, collecting saves in both appearances. He allowed no runs and just one hit, holding opponents to a .167 average against him. He also struck out six of the 16 batters he faced.

LSC Softball Quick Notes
The 2010 season began on February 1 and after one week of action two Lone Star Conference teams - Angelo State and Texas Woman’s - boast perfect 5-0 records. Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma have yet to play after their openers were cancelled.
LSC softball teams are 35-30 overall, with a 25-17 mark in the South and 10-13 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 17-11 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 0-0 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Teams are competing for one of eight spots, four from both the North and South Division, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Seguin, Texas May 6-7-8.
Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Desiree’ Nordie, East Central, So., Catcher/First Baseman, Sanger, Texas/Sanger HS
Nordie, playing catcher and first base, batted .500 (5-for-10) with one homer, one double and two runs batted in as the Lady Tigers got off to a 2-2 start to the 2010 season while participating in the St. Mary’s (Texas) Classic. Her two-out, solo-homer in the bottom of the first inning proved to be the difference in a 1-0 ECU win over No. 17 Abilene Christian. She also went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single in a 5-0 victory over No. 22 West Texas A&M. Nordie also went 2-for-3 with a double in a 2-1 loss to host St. Mary’s. She had a .900 slugging percentage for the four games and a .545 on-base percentage.
NORTH PITCHER
Wanda Malone, East Central, Jr., Pitcher, Ponder, Texas/Ponder HS (Louisiana Tech)
Malone pitched back-to-back shutouts as the Lady Tigers blanked No. 22 West Texas A&M 5-0 and No. 17 Abilene Christian 1-0 in the St. Mary’s (Texas) Classic over the weekend. Malone allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out seven in going the seven-inning distance against WTAMU on Friday. She then scattered seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts against ACU in tossing all seven innings on Saturday. Malone’s two opponents had just a combined .208 batting average against her.
SOUTH HITTER
Cassie Anderson, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., Left Field, Splendora, Texas/Splendora
Anderson opened the 2010 season by hitting safely in all seven games she played. She started the season with a bang by cracking a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning of the first game of the year. She recorded seven extra base hits during the week including three triples and two home runs. She had a walk off game winning RBI double in a 2-1 win over UT-Permian Basin. She had a single, double and home run in a loss to Midwestern State. She hit .500 with a 1.136 slugging percentage for the week.
SOUTH PITCHER
Chelsea Nelson, Angelo State, Sr., Pitcher, Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S.
Nelson posted a 2-0 record and added a save as she was a major reason for the No. 19-ranked Rambelles’ 5-0 record at the St. Mary’s Invitational over the weekend. Nelson’s 2010 debut came Friday as she held LSC North favorite Midwestern State to just two hits and fanned seven hitters in a 5-2 win over the Mustangs. She also tossed a 2-0 shutout of Southeastern Oklahoma and threw the final 2.2 innings to earn a save against St. Edward’s Saturday. Nelson tossed 16.2 innings and had a 0.42 eared run average with 13 strikeouts.
