DeAngelis Named Javelina AD

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville Vice President for Institutional Advancement Scott Gines announced that current East Central University Athletic Director Brian DeAngelis has accepted the same position in the Javelina athletic department on Monday.

“Brian has a wonderful combination of managerial, business, and leadership experiences that will positively resonate with our campus and community,” said Gines.  “His energy is infectious; his team building skills dynamic; and he passionately embraces the Division II model.”

DeAngelis comes from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, an NCAA Division II program with 13 sports. In his five year tenure, DeAngelis has overseen the addition of two female sports – volleyball and golf – and has completely overhauled the internal and external operations of the department in order for it to run more effectively and efficiently. He authored the department’s first student-athlete handbook, established a fifth-year scholarship program, instituted an academic success plan, improved communication between coaches and faculty, and helped establish university policies regarding student-athletes and procedures for formally evaluating coaches.  In 2007, he initiated the Tiger Club that has become a major fund-raising mechanism for the athletic department.

DeAngelis currently serves on the NCAA Division II Committee for Legislative Relief and is the former Chair of the Council of Athletic Administrators for the Lone Star Conference. His efforts led to the formation of a new Division II conference, The Great American Conference, in which ECU began play in the fall of 2011.

"We had a very strong pool of candidates for athletic director, and Brian stood out as a great fit for us,” said Dr. Steven Tallant, President of Texas A&M-Kingsville.  “He has a proven track record and a commitment to student-athletes and the community that fits in with Javelina athletics. We believe he will embrace our traditions while moving our athletics program forward and making it even stronger."

Prior to East Central, DeAngelis worked for four years at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a variety of roles including Associate Athletic Director, Senior Associate Athletic Director and Interim Athletic Director. He was the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Cross Country Coach at Delta State University for four years.  He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Florida Southern College and his M.B.A. with a concentration in Management from Delta State.

"I cannot thank Scott Gines, Randy Hughes, and Dr. Tallant enough for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime,” said DeAngelis.  “I honestly cannot wait to get started and I look forward to being a member of the Javelina family."

DeAngelis will officially begin his duties with Texas A&M-Kingsville on August 6.
