Recruiting Recap - Texas A&M Commerce

What they lost -
Most of the offense and some of the best defenders.  For the offense, the Lions will not see QBs Yogi Gallegos or JJ Harp, RBs Marcus Graham and Jamar Mosley, WRs Taylor Fore (HM All-LSC), Adorian Arthur, or Adam Jones and OL Jesus Fajardo, David Sudderth and Ray Agueta.  Also Kenzee Jackson, injured early last year, is transferring to the University of Louisiana-Monroe.  Defensively, 1st team All-LSC LB Cory Whitfield, LB Bryn Roy, DBs Marlin Terrell, Israel Hughes and DLs Tristian Davis and James Conyers are all moving on.

Who's coming back -
The secondary is the most experienced position for TAMC.  Joel Wren, Marcus Fore, Dre Dunbar, Alan Beatty, and Cortney Cage combined for 155 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 3 Ints and 11 passes broken up.  LBs Matt Claggett and Danny Mason were 2nd and 3rd in team tackles (combined 122, 11.5 TFL, 2 Ints, 6 passes broken up).  Up front, Tevin Moore (11.5 TFL)  and Jake Williams lead the returnees, 6 of which tallied double digit tackles.  For the offense, Cade Burks and Brandyn Hinnrichs were full-time starters for the OL, and Jarrett Golightly started half the games at TE.  Kevin Bevans, Tyler Rawlings, and Seth Smith had a combined 91 receptions for 997 yards and 7 TDs at WR.  Ryan Lusby filled in at QB when Gallegos and Harp went down with season ending injuries, posting modest numbers.

Who they brought in -
With QB such an immediate concern, six QBs have been signed, with Solano CC's Justin Gomez and former 5A player of the year Deric Davis likely to battle for the starting spot.  Ryan West, Byron Brooks (AP 1st All State) and Tre Jones could help out at WR, and Jaylyn McDuffie is the top OL prospect.  The Lions added to their deep secondary with transfers Shaquelle Massey and Robert Wheeler, and high school prospects Vondrick Jackson, Kylon Higgins and Lenzell Fulcher.  Darik Walker and Elijah Gutierrez are linebackers to watch down the road.

Overall Grade  C
The Lions suffered more losses offensively than any other LSC team, and it is unsure if they have adequately filled those voids.  The defense added to their deepest spots (linebacker and the secondary), but did not bring in much for the line.

Kid from Solano can air it out all day. Spring game was a good showing for him. Excited to see him on the field in the fall.

Finally...Deric Davis is getting a fair chance to compete for a starting job. Commerce looked pretty good against SMU in the 7 on 7 game last week. Commerce was up 3-2....3TDs to 2TDs...Deric played 3 plays. When he came off the field it was 6-2 Commerce. He can light it up. Good luck this season "Young Gun".

"Finally...Deric Davis is getting a fair chance to compete for a starting job." other than 7v7 when has he been able to be given a "fair chance?" unless your referring to him not being given a "fair chance" at Trinity Valley, I don't understand. Can't wait to watch the QBs battle for the starting spot this year but if the previous 3 years is any indication, at least 3 or 4 QBs will get on the field this year.

Texas A&M must be desperate for a QB if they think Gomez will help. He's never completed 50% of his passes in HS or Community College. He was benched numerous times in HS and would fall down if a defender got within 10 yards of him. In Community College he only started when the rest of the QB's were injured or guit the team. My grandmother could play QB better than Gomez and she died 20 years ago!
