Jai Cavness has seen his share of spring football games, especially at the NCAA Division I level during his time at TCU.
So Cavness' impressions of his first spring game under Texas A&M-Kingsville coach Bo Atterberry likely carries a little more weight than the normal observation. And in his view, the Javelinas are off to a fine start to the 2011 season.
"Very, very high. Coach Atterberry sets it up perfectly, and it was a really intense day, just like TCU is," said Cavness, a running back who joined A&M-Kingsville on National Signing Day. "Coach Atterberry had the No. 1 defense last year, and he pretty much has the schemes how to play against an offense — same thing that goes on at TCU. To rate them, I'd have to say this spring game we pretty much had a good day. I'd rate it real high."

The annual West Texas A&M Maroon-White spring game turned into spring break - at least for the Maroon squad.
The Maroon team, led by quarterback Luke Halpin and wide receiver Brittan Golden, ended WT's spring camp with bragging rights for the rest of the spring and summer, cruising past the White team, 44-3, on Thursday before an estimated 300 fans at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
The game, with teams divided into two squads after a draft by the WT coaching staff, signals the end of spring camp for the Buffs.
"I think the bragging rights from this game will last all summer, as a matter of fact," said a smiling Halpin, a redshirt freshman from Mesquite.
Halpin had reason to smile.
He went 23-of-34 for 369 yards and six touchdowns with one interception.

MEN’S TRACK
Isidro Garcia, Angelo State University, SO, Crane, Texas, Crane HS
Garcia has been part of two winning relay teams this season as Angelo State’s sprint medley relay team ran a 3:24.46 at the Incarnate Word Invitational (3/5) and the 4x400 relay team ran a 3:14.01 to win at the Trinity Open (2/25). The 4x400 time was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and is the top time in the LSC thus far. Garcia has been impressive on his own as well, as the sophomore posted the top 800-meter time (1:57.25) at the Trinity Open (2/25), also a conference-leading mark.
MEN’S FIELD
Trevor Rogers, Angelo State University, JR, El Sobrante, Calif., De Anza HS
Rogers has yet to be defeated in the long jump, winning the event at both the Trinity Open (2/25) and Incarnate Word Invitational (3/5) outdoor meets and posting the top mark at both indoor meets he competed in. Both of the junior’s outdoor jumps were NCAA provisional qualifying marks and his leap of 24’5.5” at Incarnate Word is the top mark in the conference and second-best long jump in the nation this season. Rogers also has the top 100-meter time in the conference at 10.99 seconds, run at the Trinity Open.
WOMEN’S TRACK
Theresa Sue, Angelo State University, SO, Fort Worth, Texas, Saginaw HS
Sue is making a habit of standing at the top of the podium early this season as the sophomore has contributed to four winning times in three different events. As an individual, Sue is undefeated in the 400-meter run with wins at the Trinity Open (2/25) and Incarnate Word Invitational (3/5). Sue’s time of 58.45 at Trinity is the top time in the LSC. She has also seen success as a member of ASU’s 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams which claimed titles at the Trinity Open. Sue contributed to the 4x100 team’s NCAA provisional qualifying and LSC leading time of 47.28, and to the 4x400 team’s top LSC mark of 4:00.86.
WOMEN’S FIELD
Kelsey Wilson, Angelo State University, JR, Rocksprings, Texas, Rocksprings HS
Wilson posted an NCAA provisional qualifying pole vault of 12’2” at the Incarnate Word Invitational (3/5) to win the event. Wilson’s vault is the top mark in the country by a little more than two inches. The junior finished second at the Trinity Open with a vault of 11’9.75”. Wilson is one of four Rambelles who will compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., this weekend.

The No. 19-ranked West Texas A&M Buffs baseball team will hit the road at 2 p.m. today, opening a three-game Lone Star Conference series at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
The Buffs (16-3 overall, 7-2 in LSC) made their first appearance this season in the CollegiateBaseball.com Top 30 poll Monday.
WT is coming off a successful series against then-No. 14 Cameron, winning two of three games.
"Obviously, that was a really good weekend for us," WT coach Matt Vanderburg said. "We felt like we did what we have to do and win the home series. What we need to do is stay humble and remember it's a long season. We are facing a very good Southwestern Oklahoma team."

Incarnate Word senior Casey Hurrell-Zitelman set an NCAA Division II record Thursday night in winning the 400-yard individual medley at the national meet at Palo Alto College Natatorium.
Her time of 4 minutes and 14 seconds smashed the previous record of 4:15.76, set two years ago by Yuan Qing Li of Drury, Mo.
It was the second title in two days for Hurrell-Zitelman, who won the 1,000 freestyle Wednesday.

Nicolas Clerc, Cameron University, FR, Buenos Aires, Argentina, World Hope Academy
Clerc had a phenomenal week of tennis, winning all four of the matches he played. He picked up his first win on Feb. 28 when he defeated Connor Tebow of Cowley County CC 6-1, 6-0. On March 4, he grabbed back-to-back victories. He overwhelmed East Central’s Ignacio Lucero 6-0, 6-0 and then took out Ivan Aragona of Colorado State-Pueblo 6-1, 6-0. Clerc carried his momentum into the following day, getting the best of Southwest Baptist’s Juan Estepa with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Clerc, who has only dropped one set this year, has had an outstanding season so far and boasts an undefeated record.
WOMEN’S
Julia Puckhaber, Cameron University, SO, Hambergen, Germany, Gymnasium Osterholz Schambeck
Puckhaber picked up a convincing win in her No. 2 singles match against East Central on March 1. She dispatched Rhiannon Mecanovic 6-3, 6-0. Puckhaber also secured a win at the No. 1 doubles position with her partner Amanda Moberg. The Cameron pair made quick work of ECU’s Marta Valles and Nilsa Ramirez, defeating them 8-3.
