LSC Roundup 3-19

McCasland, top D-II coaches unlikely to get offers - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
A good friend called me on Thursday with a good rumor. Another friend of his had told him that Texas Tech was going to hire Grant McCasland to be its next head basketball coach.

"Is it true?" my buddy asked me.

I told him I had talked to McCasland about an hour earlier and the Midwestern State coach had said he was staying put. I had also read where Tech had offered the job to Billy Gillespie and he was expected to accept it. Up in Okie land, the media were asking Central Oklahoma coach Terry Evans if he was interested in replacing Jeff Capel at OU. Evans made it clear that he was. He called it a "dream job" to coach at a place where he had a lot of success as a player. He is the Sooners' all-time assists leader and worked as OU operations director the year that Kelvin Sampson took Oklahoma to the Final Four.

There is no doubt in my mind that McCasland and Evans would both make excellent Division I head coaches.

Playing to Honor Mom and Dad - Jason Notoras, KRISTV

Playing softball for the Javelinas is a way for Amanda Arriaga to move forward in life. Her mom enters stage four in her battle against Leukemia, and Arriaga lost her father suddenly when she was a child.

"I was nine years-old, and we were packing to head out to a (softball) tournament in the (Rio Grande) Valley. He just fell, and we didn't know what happened. It ended up he had an aneurism as big as a grapefruit in his head."

Her father motivated Arriaga to first become involved with softball. She honors him by making a cross every time she has an at-bat.

"It's my way of thinking he is protecting me, and I'll be okay no matter what happens. If only he could watch me now; it would be amazing."
