Midwestern State had a scary moment in the first 20 seconds of the game Thursday night.  As David Terrell stole the ball and drove the distance for a slam dunk, the Lone Star Conference South Division player of the year had gone down on the other end.

"I rolled my ankle," Chris Hagan said. "I stepped on my teammate's foot backing up trying to watch D.T.'s dunk."

"Which one?" the senior guard was asked.

"My right one," he answered.

"No, which dunk?' the questioner replied.

It was the first of eight dunks for Terrell, who had a double-double 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to an 82-67 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in the opening round of the LSC postseason tournament.

His coach says he is 6 feet 3½ inches.  The program calls him 6 feet 5 inches.  But in his first Lone Star Conference postseason game, David Terrell played like a 7-footer.  It was a Shaq-like performance for the guy they call D.T.

He scored a career-high 24 points — two-thirds of that coming on eight rim-shaking dunks. And he pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds. Throw in three blocks and three steals and it's easy to see why Midwestern State is still playing basketball and Texas A&M-Commerce isn't.

"He won the basketball game for us," MSU coach Grant McCasland said after his powerful forward's double-double helped the Mustangs to a hard-fought 82-67 win over the Lions here Thursday in the opening round of the LSC tournament.

I described D.T.'s night as Shaq-like for another reason.  He threw up eight bricks at the free throw line. His 2-for-10 showing at the stripe was about as ugly as all those dunks were beautiful.

"I wished we had fouled him every time he touched the ball. It was maybe not my best coaching move," Commerce coach Sam Walker said.

Things weren't going well Thursday for West Texas A&M.  The Buffs would go up, then the Cameron Aggies would climb back into it. Every bucket was a struggle, and Cameron was counterpunching.

Then, almost out of nowhere, WT looked like the basketball team that won 22 games during the regular season.  The Buffs used a strong second half to run away with a 75-59 Lone Star Conference Championship men's quarterfinal win against Cameron before 428 in Bruin Fieldhouse.

The Buffs (23-5) advance to a semifinal at noon Saturday against Central Oklahoma, which defeated Eastern New Mexico, 100-78, in a quarterfinal.

"I was really proud of the way we played, especially in the second half," WT coach Rick Cooper said. "I thought we were able to get some stops and get some rebounds and create some separation."
