Softball Weekly Release

League play continues - LSC Office

Lone Star Conference play is underway with league games starting last week. In the North, three teams are tied at the top with 2-1 marks, while Angelo State and Abilene Christian lead the South after opening LSC play at 3-0.

LSC softball teams are 214-132-2 overall, with a 115-74-1 record in the South and 99-58-1 in the North this season. The squads are currently 66-30 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 36-30 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH HITTER
Cami Correa, East Central University, JR, C/DH, Brawley, Calif., Brawley Union HS
Correa batted .571 (8-for-14) with two homers, two doubles and five runs batted in during ECU’s five games. Correa went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer in the Lady Tigers’ 8-0 win over Central Oklahoma and was a perfect 3-for-3 with a solo-blast in ECU’s 5-2 loss to Missouri Western. She hit safely in four of the five games to go with a .647 on-base percentage and 1.143 slugging percentage.

NORTH PITCHER
Wanda Malone, East Central University, SR, Pitcher, Ponder, Texas, Ponder HS (Louisiana Tech)
Malone posted a 2-1 record on the week, including a pair of shutouts (one no-hitter) of Central Oklahoma. She fired a five-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Bronchos. She struck out five and walked only one in that game. The next day, she tossed a four-hitter in going seven complete innings in ECU’s 2-0 victory over UCO as she struck out four and walked only one. Malone also pitched the seventh inning, faced the minimum three batters and fanned two in a 5-1 loss to the Bronchos. In a 6-2 loss to No. 20 Missouri Western, she allowed five earned runs off six hits with five strikeouts and only one walk in 4.2 innings. For the week she had a 1.98 earned run average with 16 strikeouts and just three walks.

SOUTH HITTER
Missy Mendoza, Abilene Christian University, SR, Outfield, Irvine, Calif., Mater Dei HS
Mendoza swung a hot bat over the weekend helping the Wildcats complete a three game conference sweep of Eastern New Mexico. Through three games Mendoza hit a blistering .667 to go 10-for-15 with 7 RBIs, three doubles and a home run. The senior from Irvine, California, finished the weekend with a 1.067 slugging percentage and swiped a pair of bases on the base paths. On Saturday, Mendoza finished the afternoon with eight hits going 4-for-5 in each game of the twin bill.

SOUTH PITCHER
Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, P, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall HS
Sanchez was a perfect 3-0 in the week including shutting out number six-ranked West Texas A&M twice. In the first game she pitched a no-hitter as UIW run-ruled the Buffs. The next day she went nine shutout innings as UIW won again 1-0. She struck out 14 in that game, statistically every other batter she faced. She currently is working on a string of 17 consecutive scoreless innings. Her season mark is now 10-1...the only loss was the game she pitched 13 innings only to lose 4-3.
