Softball Weekly Release: Conference play starts this week - LSC Office

Conference play starts this week for Lone Star Conference teams. All teams in the North and South divisions will play a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against each division opponent.
LSC softball teams are 178-102-2 overall, with a 89-60-1 record in the South and 89-42-1 in the North this season. The squads are currently 64-28 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 36-26 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH HITTER
Mallory Mooney, Midwestern State University, JR, 3B, Mesquite, Texas, Horn HS
Mooney led the 13th-ranked Mustangs to a perfect 5-0 showing at the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational by hitting .538 with three doubles and a homer while driving in eight runs. The junior third baseman from Mesquite, who slugged 1.000 and drew four walks to get on base at a .647 clip, notched three multiple-hit games over the weekend. Mooney connected on a pair of doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian on Friday then pelted St. Edward’s with an RBI-double and a 3-run homer in 13-5 win before going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in Sunday’s 5-0 win over Incarnate Word.

NORTH PITCHER
Carrie Harvey, Cameron University, JR, RHP, Burkburnett, Texas, Burkburnett
Harvey, the reigning LSC North Pitcher of the Week, turned in another spectacular performance in the circle for the Aggies this weekend at the 2011 Best Western Spring Fling. Harvey picked up a pair of wins as CU went 3-1 at the tournament including a shutout of No. 9 Nebraska-Omaha. Against UNO, Harvey tossed seven complete while striking out 12 and allowing just a pair of hits. Batters hit just .143 off the Burkburnett, Texas native as she allowed only eight hits in 56 at-bats. Adding to her stat line, Harvey struck out a whopping 26 of those 56 for a strike out percentage of 46.4 percent.

SOUTH HITTER
Kim LeComte, West Texas A&M University, JR, OF, Boerne, Texas, Boerne HS
LeComte drove in 10 runs with two homeruns and stole five bases as the #6 Lady Buffs went 4-0 this past weekend at the Lady Buff Invite to improve to 17-1 overall. LeComte made program history on Saturday, hitting for the first cycle in school history in the 15-2 win against ENMU. She went 4-for-4 at the dish with 8 RBI in the run-rule victory. The Saturday win against Eastern New Mexico marked WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski’s 500th career victory.

SOUTH PITCHER
Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, P, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall HS
At the Midwestern State tournament, UIW went 3-2 with Sanchez earning all three victories as she improved to 7-1 for the season. She had complete-game efforts in each of the three games and at one point she worked 10 consecutive shutout innings. Sanchez opened with three shutout innings to give her team the opportunity to score first in each game.
