The Lone Star Conference baseball season continues with several conference and non-conference match-ups this week. Angelo State will look to continue their nine-game winning streak as they take on non-conference foes St. Mary’s and Southern Arkansas, while Incarnate Word will try to hold the top position as they battle West Texas A&M and Texas-Permian Basin.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTERS
Zach Cohen, Angelo State University, JR, SB, Houston, Texas, Westside High School
Cohen has been a big part of Angelo State’s nine-game win streak as he has compiled a 13-game hitting streak which included a triple and a home run in the same inning at No. 30 Abilene Christian. Cohen’s hot hitting helped the Rams to a 5-0 week with their first-ever sweep of Lone Star Conference foe ACU and a doubleheader sweep in non-conference action of Henderson State. Cohen hit .444 (8-for-18) last week with a pair of doubles, a triple and a homer. He scored seven runs and drove in four. At ACU, Cohen was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle as the junior second baseman went 3-for-4, scored a pair of runs and had two RBIs in the Rams’ 10-1 victory in game one of a three-game series. This season, Cohen is leading the Rams in six categories with a .397 batting average, 31 hits, 26 runs, two triples, 44 total bases and 13 walks. He has also recorded 13 RBIs and six doubles.
Christian Wise, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, JR, SS, Perth, Australia, Western Texas JC
Wise became the first Southwestern Oklahoma State University batter to hit for the cycle in more than two years when he went five-for-six in the Bulldogs 19-9 victory over West Texas A&M on Friday. Wise, whose five hits tied a school record, collected his final hit, a two-run homer, in the bottom of the eighth that forced the 10-run rule against the Buffs. For the series against WTAMU, Wise hit .615 with seven RBIs.
PITCHERS
James Conlee, Angelo State University, JR, P, Georgetown, Texas, Georgetown High School
Conlee has been a key component to the Rams’ bullpen coming in as relief in 15 appearances this season. Last week, the right-hander saw action in three of the Rams’ five games and collected a pair of wins improving his record to a team-best 4-0. Conlee pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out four. The junior out of Georgetown, Texas, posted 1.50 ERA last week and lowered his season earned-Run Average to a team-best 1.12. On the year, Conlee has allowed five runs, four earned, on 23 hits in 32.0 innings pitched while fanning 20 and earning four saves.
Jimmy Johnson, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, SR, P, Wilburton, Okla., Wilburton HS
Johnson collected a win in game two of the series that ensured a series victory for Southeastern over No. 15 Tarleton State. Johnson tossed 7.0 innings to collect the complete game and allowed just one run on five hits. TSU batted just .200 against him and none of his five allowed hits went for extra bases. He struck out three batters and issued just one walk.
TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE ANNOUNCES RAND CHAMPION AS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
COMMERCE, Texas – Texas A&M University-Commerce Athletic Director Carlton Cooper today announced the hiring of Rand Champion as the Lions’ Director of Athletic Media and Public Relations, overseeing the media efforts of all 11 Texas A&M-Commerce varsity programs.
Champion comes to A&M-Commerce after spending the past three years as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. There he worked primarily with the Wildcats’ five-time NCAA champion women’s lacrosse team and nationally-ranked women’s volleyball team, while also overseeing media efforts for the women’s golf and women’s fencing programs. Champion also assisted with game day responsibilities for football and men’s and women’s basketball at Northwestern.
Prior to joining the staff at Northwestern, Champion worked as a media relations assistant at North Dakota State University, handling responsibilities for the wrestling and women’s soccer teams as well as assisting with all Bison home football and basketball events. He got his start in the field of media relations at Vanderbilt University, covering the Commodores’ women’s lacrosse team while serving as a media relations intern.
Champion began his career in television, spending three years at KZTV-10, the CBS affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas. During his tenure, he filled a number of different roles, ultimately serving as the weekend sports anchor.
A native of Sandy, Utah, Champion earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Brigham Young University in 2002. He then achieved his master’s degree in sport administration from Belmont University in 2007, fulfilling internships with Vanderbilt University, Tennessee State University and the Tennessee Titans as part of his curriculum.
