LSC VOLLEYBALL
After two weeks of non-conference play, Lone Star Conference volleyball teams begin league play this week. Teams will play a home and away match against each of the other teams this season. West Texas A&M ran the table at the Colorado Premier Challenge, with four wins including three over teams that were ranked in the top 10.
WT and A&M-Commerce lead the standings at 7-1 overall, while three teams - Angelo State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Woman’s - are 6-2.
LSC volleyball teams are 53-36 overall this season. The squads are currently 10-15 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 6-6 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Rachel Robertson, Texas A&M University - Commerce, SR, Princeton, Texas, Princeton HS
Robertson helped the Lions to a 3-1 mark over the weekend at the Tarleton Volleyball Invitational, earning MVP honors of the tournament with 70 kills, a .400 hitting percentage and 12 blocks. She had two 20-plus kill matches, becoming the ninth member of the A&M-Commerce 1,000-kill club and moving from ninth to fourth all-time in program history with 1,069 career kills. On the season, she is averaging 4.03 kills per set and a .434 hitting percentage.
Shelbi Stewart, Midwestern State University, SR, Pflugerville, Texas, Pflugerville HS
Stewart garnered MVP honors at the Colorado-Colorado Springs Invitational after posting 3.92 kills and 2.58 digs per set with a .255 hitting percentage. The senior from Pflugerville recorded double-figure kills in each match including a 12-kill, 9-dig effort against No. 12 Wayne State (Neb.). She also posted double-doubles against Franklin Pierce (14 kills, 10 digs) and UC-Colorado Springs (10 kills, 10 digs).
Viktorija Jablonska, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Daugavpils, Latvia, Daugavpils 16 Secondary
Jablonska recorded 57 kills, 51 assists, 28 digs, six service aces and six total blocks while posting two triple-doubles in the four games at Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic in Grand Junction, Colorado. She had 22 kills, 13 assists and 14 digs against Fort Hays State on Friday and 16 kills, 18 assists and 15 digs against the host Colorado Mesa on Saturday. Jablonska was selected to the all-tournament team after posting a game-high in kills in three of the four games. On the season she has 95 kills, 54 assists, 51 digs and 14 total blocks.
DEFENSIVE
Lydia Werchan, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, Spring Branch, Texas, Smithson Valley
Werchan was a dominant force in the back row for the Cardinals at the Tarleton State Tournament. She had 25 digs and four aces in a three-set sweep of SE Oklahoma. She came back with 27 digs, three aces and three assists in a four-set win over Ouachita Baptist on Friday. On Saturday, she had 17 digs in a 3-set win over New Mexico Highlands and 25 digs in a 3-set loss to William Jewell. She averaged 7.15 digs per set for the week with nine aces. She eclipsed 1,000 career digs in the OBU game.
Lauren Beville, West Texas A&M University, SR, Hereford, Texas, Hereford HS
Beville continued to make her way up the Career Digs list at WT as the #14 Lady Buffs went 4-0 at the Colorado Premiere topping #5 Central Missouri, #10 Metro State, West Florida and #3 Tampa en route to the Tournament Title. Beville was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. The senior libero tallied 75 digs for an average of 5.36 per set to lead the Lady Buffs defensively. Beville now sits at 1,878 career digs just 272 behind second place (Brittani Bell) and 370 out of first (Sara Contreras).
Nikki McNorton, Tarleton State University, SR, Houston, Texas, Channelview HS
McNorton led the team in total blocks with 20 en route to a 57.5-point effort in the Tarleton Invitational last weekend. The senior from Channelview had 1.43 blocks per set with nine solo and 11 assists to earn all-tournament team acclaim, while the team posted a 3-1 record.
SETTER
Lacy Hayes, West Texas A&M University, SR, Cypress, Texas, Cy-Fair HS
Hayes showed why she’s one of the best setters in all of NCAA Division II this past weekend as the #14 Lady Buffs went 4-0 at the Colorado Premiere with wins against #5 Central Missouri, #10 Metro State, West Florida and #3 Tampa for WT’s third Premiere Tournament Title. Hayes was named the MVP of the tournament for her efforts on the court. The senior registered a staggering 162 assists for an average of 11.5 per set to go along with 59 digs (4.21/set) and seven block assists. Hayes registered a match high 60 assists to go along with 22 digs against West Florida in the Tournament Semifinals.
Danielle Barker, Tarleton State University, JR, Amarillo, Texas, Amarillo HS
As the only active setter on the roster this weekend, Barker played every point of the two-day, four-game Tarleton Invitational. The junior setter from Amarillo posted 162 assists over four games as she led the TexAnns to a 3-1 record. She also added a team-high six service aces and 29 digs over the four games.
