Lone Star Conference action continues for both the men and women. Incarnate Word is leading the men’s standings after a shutout win over West Texas A&M. On the women’s side, WT has six points to top the league, followed by Angelo State and Midwestern State who have a win and tie versus each other for four points.
LSC men’s soccer teams are 19-5-3 overall this season. The squads are currently 4-3-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 8-2-1 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
The women’s teams are 16-27-4 overall this season. The squads are currently 2-9-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 2-4 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Julian Brown-Latham, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, F, Toronto, Ont., St. Edmunds Champion
Brown-Latham provided a spark off the bench for the Cardinals last week. He came through with his best performance of the season in a 4-0 win over then No. 13 West Texas A&M. He subbed on in the 37th minute and scored 1:30 later when he headed in a crossing pass from Wylie Rea to give the team a 1-0 lead. He stayed on to start the second half and took advantage of a WT mistake on a pass back to the goalie that he intercepted and then put into the back of the net in the 49th minute. He was also a strong threat to score in the team’s 4-0 win over Our Lady of the Lake. He finished the week with two goals, a game-winning goal and five shots.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
James Nero, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Charlotte, NC, Olympic
Nero was part of a UIW back line that allowed just two shots on goal in two 4-0 wins last week. He headlined the defensive effort against No. 13 West Texas A&M as they handcuffed the LSC’s leading scorer Dominic Furness. Furness came into the game with nine goals and was limited to just three shots with none on goal. Nero played 174 of the 180 minutes last week. He was a key reason why Our Lady of the Lake managed only one shot and he nearly scored on a header in the second half.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Samantha Johnson, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, M, Austin, Texas, Home School
Johnson played a key role in the Cardinals’ win over visiting Abilene Christian in the LSC opener on Friday. She scored the first goal of the game in 52nd minute and then assisted on the team’s third goal in a 3-1 victory. She played all 90 minutes in the ACU win and in the 1-0 loss to Midwestern State on Sunday.
CO-WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Anna Molen, Midwestern State University, JR, Flower Mound, Texas, Marcus HS
Molen played a key role at center back to help Midwestern State turn the tide on the back row last week in earning a draw Friday against Angelo State before claiming its first win Sunday at Incarnate Word. With assistance from senior outside back Berklee Dressler, the junior from Flower Mound led a back row featuring a pair of freshmen making their first starts limit the opposition to one goal in 200 minutes of field time. The Mustangs had permitted 11 goals over the previous four matches.
Kara Edwards, Angelo State University, JR, Bastrop, Texas, Bastrop HS
Edwards was instrumental in helping the Rambelles limit opponents to only one goal in 200 minutes of action last weekend. Edwards, a strong defender from Bastrop, also assisted in ASU’s goal in its 1-1 tie against Midwestern State. Along with her fellow defenders, Edwards limited ACU to few scoring chances and helped the Rambelles to their second shutout of the season.
