LSC Scoop Power Poll and Player Superlatives Week One

1. Midwestern State - idle last week, open season with Tarleton State
2. Abilene Christian - shut out usually high-powered Mumme offense
3. Texas A&M-Kingsville - solid win over Central Washington at home
4. Tarleton State - idle last week, will jump right into the fire against Midwestern State
5. West Texas A&M - gave up 271 rushing yards in loss at CSU-Pueblo
6. Angelo State - Solid win over Western State, now face tougher RMAC foe Chadron State
7. Incarnate Word - squeaked by NAIA Texas College, led by passing game 
8. Texas A&M-Commerce - lost soundly to former LSC-North foe Southeastern Oklahoma
9. Eastern New Mexico - gave up 42 straight points after taking 14-0 lead at NMHU

Week One Superlatives

Offense - Blake Hamblin, Angelo State - Hamblin opened the 2012 campaign with a strong effort against Western State, completing 19-28 passes for 341 yards and 4 TDs to 4 different receivers, garnering a QB efficiency rating of 203.0.

Defense - Nick Richardson, Abilene Christian - Richardson had 10 tackles for ACU in the crosstown rout of McMurry.  Six of those tackles were sacks, tying an ACU record, for combined losses of 53 yards.

Special Teams - Steve Harris, Texas A&M-Kingsville - Harris had a big game defensively for TAMK, but his biggest play came on special teams.  With the Javelinas leading 3-0 midway through the second quarter, Harris took the short snap on fourth down and completed a pass to T.J. McCullough for 32 yards, keeping an eventual scoring drive alive.

LoneStar Conference Weekly Football Release

LSC FOOTBALL

This week’s Lone Star Conference football schedule includes two league contests - Midwestern State at Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville at Abilene Christian - along with five non-conference match-ups.  There is one Top 25 match-up as the No. 9 Wildcats and No. 24 Javelinas square off in Abilene, Texas.

      

ACU, Angelo State, TAMUK and Incarnate Word each started the 2012 season with wins.

      

LSC football teams are 4-3 overall this season.  The squads are 1-2 combined versus the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

 

LONE STAR FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

The Lone Star Football Festival, a three-day, six-game affair which includes all nine LSC football teams, is set for September 13-14-15 at Cowboys Stadium.  The event starts on Thursday with Midwestern State versus Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m.  The game will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network.

      

Friday’s lineup includes one LSC game and a high school contest, with Incarnate Word versus Eastern New Mexico at 3:30 p.m., followed by defending 5A state champion Southlake Carroll against Temple at 7:30 p.m.

      

On Saturday, the action starts at Noon with Angelo State in opposition to two-time NCAA Division II national champion Valdosta State from the Gulf South Conference, followed by a pair of conference clashes with Tarleton State against Abilene Christian at 4 p.m. and Texas A&M-Kingsville versus West Texas A&M at 8 p.m.

    

Admission to the event will be offered in daily tickets for Thursday, Friday or Saturday’s games along with an option for a three-day festival pass.

      

A daily ticket for Thursday or Friday is $20 for adults and $10 for students.  Tickets for Saturday are $25 for adults and $10 for students.  The festival pass, which is good for admission all three days, is $35 for adults and $15 for students.  Seating will be general admission with children 1-year and older requiring a ticket. To be admitted with a student ticket, bearer must be between 1 and 18 years old or present valid college ID.

       

The 2011 Lone Star Football Festival drew an LSC attendance record 24,837 fans to a tripleheader of games, which included Midwestern State defeating Texas A&M-Commerce 63-17 in the Harvey Martin Classic, North Alabama stopping Abilene Christian 23-17, and West Texas A&M using a quick start to top Texas A&M-Kingsville 42-21.

 

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE

Torrence Allen, West Texas A&M University, JR, WR, Meridian, Texas, Meridian HS 

Allen had a career day with a career and team-high nine receptions for 164 yards and one touchdown. Allen had career-long 75-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Vaughan to bring the Buffs within 37-27 early in the fourth quarter. He also had one solo tackle and one assisted tackle on the day. His previous best number of catches was four set twice, once last year and one the year before. 

 

DEFENSIVE

Nick Richardson, Abilene Christian University, SO, DE, Waco, Texas, Waco HS 

Richardson -- in his first start at defensive end after playing linebacker last season as a redshirt freshman -- tied the school record for sacks in a game with six in ACU’s season-opening 51-0 win over McMurry. ... Richardson had three sacks in the first quarter and then had one in each of the next three quarters as he tied the record set originally in 1997 when James Henderson had six sacks in a game against Texas A&M-Commerce. ... Richardson finished the game with 10 tackles as the new-look ACU defense stymied an offense that was one of the best in NCAA Division III football in 2011. ... But McMurry -- new to NCAA Division II football in 2012 -- had just 301 total yards, including just 12 on the ground. 

 

SPECIAL TEAMS

Nathan Slaughter, West Texas A&M University, JR, PR/KR, Lubbock, Texas, Lubbock HS 

Slaughter had an impressive debut as the starting return man for the Buffs. He had six returns for 192 yards for a 32.0 average per return. He had a career-high 62-yard return to begin the second half. Slaughter led the team with 203 all-purpose yards as he had four receptions for 21 yards and two carries, too.
