LSC VOLLEYBALL
Lone Star Conference volleyball teams started league play last week, and continue LSC matches this week. Five teams jumped out to unbeaten starts, with Texas A&M-Commerce, Angelo State, Texas Woman’s, Tarleton State and West Texas A&M posting wins. Action among those teams this week includes Tarleton at ASU and TWU facing A&M-C on Tuesday; WT at A&M-C Friday and WT at TWU Saturday.
LSC volleyball teams are 65-45 overall this season. The squads are currently 10-15 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 7-6 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Halie Harton, West Texas A&M University, JR, Roswell, N.M., Goddard HS
Harton continued to lead the injury ridden No. 7 Lady Buffs’ offense this past weekend as WT swept rival Abilene Christian to open up LSC play before registering sweeps of Southwestern Oklahoma State and St. Edward’s on Saturday in Canyon. Harton registered 53 kills for an average of 5.89 per set for an attack percentage of .321 to go along with 21 digs and five block assists. Harton registered a career high 21 kills against SWOSU on Saturday afternoon, hitting an incredible .472 for the match.
Katie Covell, Tarleton State University, SO, Lytle, Texas, Lytle HS
Covell led the TexAnns in points this weekend as Tarleton swept Midwestern State and Cameron to extend their winning streak to five - including four straight sweeps. The sophomore from Lytle led Tarleton with 26 kills (4.33 per set) and 29.5 points (4.92 per set). In addition to leading the team in kills, Covell only committed eight hitting errors in six sets for a .300 hitting percentage.
DEFENSIVE
Lauren Beville, West Texas A&M University, SR, Hereford, Texas, Hereford HS
Beville continued to be a force on the back row for the No. 7 Lady Buffs this past weekend as they went 3-0 with sweeps of Abilene Christian, Southwestern Oklahoma State and St. Edward’s in Canyon. Beville registered 55 digs for an average of 6.11 per set. With her 55 digs in this past weekend, Beville sits in 3rd place all-time with 1,933 career digs to move past former Lady Buff great Shannon Stroud (1,801). Beville is just 217 digs away from 2nd place (Brittani Bell - 2,150) and 315 away from first (Sara Contreras - 2,248).
Chloe’ Tate, Texas Woman’s University, JR, Denton, Texas, Billy Ryan HS
Tate recorded a team-best 12 total blocks and 32.5 points to lead the Pioneers to 2-0 record on the road over the weekend. She had 13 kills and four total blocks in a sweep at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and then added 11 kills and eight total blocks in a four-set win at Incarnate Word on Saturday. On the season Tate leads the Pioneers with 34 total blocks. She currently ranked fourth in the conference in blocks, seventh in hitting percentage and 10th in points.
SETTER
Alex Woolsey, Angelo State University, SR, Plano, Texas, Plano East HS
Woolsey had a milestone weekend for the Belles as she passed the 4,000 assists mark in her career in last Friday’s win over Cameron. The senior setter continued her strong play on Saturday to help the Belles sweep Midwestern State and finished the weekend with 68 assists to direct ASU which hit .307 as a team. She had 11.33 assists per set and also had 11 digs.
Jordan Neal, Texas A&M University - Commerce, JR, Joshua, Texas, Joshua HS
Jordan played a key role in helping A&M-Commerce to a 2-0 start in Lone Star Conference play, finishing with 63 assists (10.5 per set), seven aces, 23 digs and five blocks in helping the Lions to 3-0 road sweeps over Incarnate Word and A&M-Kingsville. Neal was solid all week, pacing the Lions to a .217 hitting percentage, dishing out 29 assists, five aces and 12 digs against the Cardinals, followed the next afternoon with 34 digs, 2 aces and 11 digs against the Javelinas. On the year she is averaging 10.5 assists per set, helping pace A&M-Commerce to its best start since 2002.
