The No. 4-ranked Angelo State softball team (49-8) outlasted the University of Indianapolis, 3-1, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship Finals at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
The Rambelles used another solid pitching performance from junior right-hander Chelsea Nelson (31-4) as they remained perfect all-time (3-0) in first round games at the national finals. Nelson limited the Greyhounds to just four single while fanning nine UI hitters and issuing just one walk.
ASU fell behind early as the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a one-out RBI single to leftfield by Megan Russell, scoring Lindsey Gustine. However, the Rambelles would score three unanswered runs to come from behind for the victory.
The Rambelles knotted the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the third with a successful two-out double steal, scoring freshman Sandy James. ASU then took its first lead in the fifth frame with back-to-back doubles by sophomore Alix Dean and senior Macy Baker. Baker's double scored freshman pinch runner Nicole Wellmann. The Rambelles added a final run in the sixth inning on a double by James down the rightfield line to score junior Kristen Frye from first base.
"Chelsea threw really well in for us and I thought we played good defense today," said ASU head coach Travis Scott. "We hit the ball hard and it finally paid off later in the game. We made a good job of adjusting to a good pitcher. That was the key to winning this game."
ASU tallied six hits in the contest with James leading the pack with a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and an RBI. Dean and James now each have 18 doubles on the season, matching the ASU single-season record held by Brittney Cargill (2007).
Indianapolis (36-20) will advance to the loser's bracket and will not play against until Saturday. Russell (19-11) was handed the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game.
The Rambelles will next play 11 a.m. (Central) Friday against winner of today's North Georgia/Dixie State contest. UI will play the loser of that contest 11 a.m. (Central) Saturday.

Helton Adds Three From Tyler Junior College For 2009-10 Greyhound Basketball

Wednesday, May 20, 2009PORTALES, N.M.— Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach has added three more players to the Greyhound roster in preparations for the upcoming 2009-10 season, signing Reggie Nelson (G, 6-1, Tyler, Texas/John Tyler HS/Tyler JC), Alan Branch (G/F, 6-4, Houston, Texas/Houston Hightower HS/Tyler JC) and Tyler Jefferson (F, 6-6, Ft. Worth, Texas/North Crowley HS/Tyler JC) to National Letters of Intent.
The trio helped guide the Apaches to the Region XIV semifinals last season and an overall record of 24-6. Over their two seasons at Tyler, the team compiled a overall record of 49-10 and a conference mark of 33-8 in one of the top junior college conferences in the country.
Nelson earned first team All-Region XIV tournament along with players who have signed at Creighton, Wake Forest, Auburn and Louisiana Tech. He averaged 20.5 pointer per game in the Region XIV tournament and was in the top ten in the conference in free throw percentage and steals per game. “Reggie gives us a great leader who is competitive and plays with energy,” said Helton. “He is fast with the basketball and can make plays off the dribble and the catch. He will be an exciting player to watch, we are thrilled to have him.”
Branch’s versatility helped the Apaches, as he was able to play both the two and three positions, providing strong play on both sides of the court in the most successful two-year period in TJC history. “Alan is a solid perimeter player who can really shoot the ball and has a good feel for the game,” Helton said. “He is a winner who played a huge role in Tyler’s tremendous success over the last two years. We are extremely happy to have him.”
Jefferson was a Second Team All-Region XIV selection, finishing in the top ten in the conference in field goal percentage. He averaged 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. “Tyler gives us a tremendous scorer at the forward spot,” said Helton. “He can score off the dribble and with his back to the basket. He is a player that can make an immediate impact for us offensively and defensively. Tyler is an intense player who plays extremely hard.

PORTALES, N.M.— Just weeks after taking over as the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Andrew Helton, looking to make an immediate impact on the Greyhound roster for the 2009-10 season, inking Jordan Romero (G, 6-1, 170, Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michaels HS) to a National Letter of Intent. Romero should add plenty of championship experience to the roster, as he guided St. Michaels High School to three state championship appearances, earning two titles, along with an appearance in the state semifinals.
“We are very excited that Jordan will be a Greyhound.” Said Helton. “He brings a great feel for the game and comes from a very successful high school program. He is an excellent young man whose guard skills and work ethic will really benefit our program.”
As a five-year varsity player for the Horsemen, he guided the squad to 119 victories, garnering three all-state selections in the process. Last season, he concluded his career with 1,779 career point and led SMHS in scoring (16.1 ppg), rebounding (5.1 rpg), assists (3.5 apg) and steals (80). Romero’s effort lifted the Horsemen to a 46-41 victory over Pojoaque High School in the state semifinals, before falling to Hope Christian in the championship game. While competing at St. Michaels HS, he played for head coach Ron Geyer.
