ACU blanks Angelo State for first LSC title since 2002
The three previous years, the Abilene Christian University baseball team reached the Lone Star Conference tournament final only to watch another team celebrate -- on the Wildcats' own field, no less.

Not this time.

ACU starter Preston Vancil, working Tuesday on two days rest, tossed seven shutout innings, and the Wildcats jumped on Angelo State early en route to a 6-0 victory to claim the LSC Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field.

"What do you say when you have a pitcher like Preston, who grabs the ball and goes out on two days rest and gives you seven innings of shutout baseball?" ACU coach Britt Bonneau said. "We didn't have to go to our bullpen early, and when you have two guys like (Kevin) Justice and (Brad) Rutherford, who have picked us up all year, they come in and get the job done. They made it look easy, and you're talking about a team that has scored a run in 61 straight games, and we shut them out. I think we just wanted it. The pitchers and the team were on this tournament."

Wildcats deny Rams title shot
ABILENE - A lack of offense and costly mistakes prevented Angelo State University from winning the Lone Star Conference baseball championship Tuesday at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Rams needed to defeat Abilene Christian twice to win the championship, but a six-hit, two-error game in the first matchup led to a 6-0 victory and the LSC title for the Wildcats.

ACU (43-17) won its first LSC baseball championship since 2002 and received the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament.

The Rams (43-18) will have to wait until late Sunday night to find out if they will receive an at-large bid into that tournament. ASU has never received an at-large bid. In 2007, when the Rams won the South Central Regional, they received the automatic berth by winning the LSC tournament.

Four College of the Redwoods sophomore football players recently signed scholarship offers to play football at the next level. Defensive back Travis McCray signed a letter of intent with East Central University. McCray is originally from Chamberlain High School in Tampa Bay, Florida, East Central University (ECU) is located in Ada, Oklahoma. ECU is an NCAA Division II institution which competes in the Lone Star Conference.
