ASU decathlete Ryan McWilliams back for more
SAN ANGELO, Texas — The fact that senior decathlete Ryan McWilliams is competing at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championships is testament to his competitive spirit. McWilliams, selected as captain by his teammates, missed the entire 2008 season after tearing a ligament in his elbow.

“One bad throw in the javelin,” McWilliams said. “I didn’t find out it was torn until the end of the year. I kept competing, but I didn’t throw again until the national meet.”

McWilliams was leading the decathlon at the 2007 national championships but headed into the javelin throw knowing he could slip in the standings.

“We just taped it up and I went for it,” McWilliams said. “I didn’t get a very good throw at all, but I got a mark and it kept me in the top three.”

That third-place finish in the 2007 national meet fueled the All-American through eight months of strong-willed rehab after having his elbow surgically repaired.

FORT MYERS — As he distributed slices of his celebratory cake, Ed Dorris wasn't alone in dishing out something.

South Fort Myers High football coach Grant Redhead kidded Dorris that he should do more than just feed others.

"You better eat some of that. You better get big," Redhead warned. "They're big in that Lone Star Conference you're going to in Texas."

Dorris -- and his 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame -- will be headed to Texas A&M University-Commerce. He made his college destination official on Tuesday during a mid-afternoon signing ceremony in front of dozens of teammates in the school's chorus room.
