Afternoon Update

Sidelines: Hills chooses Texas' Tarleton State
Butte College guard Devon Hills, the Golden Valley Conference's men's basketball most valuable player selection last season, has made an official commitment to transfer to NCAA Division II standout Tarleton State. The central Texas-based program has won 78 percent of its games (152-42) over the past six seasons and is a member of the Lone Star Conference. The Texans advanced the Division II Final Four in 2005.

"Devon was also looking at Central Missouri and Kentucky Wesleyan, but he decided on Tarleton State and I think it's a good place for him," Butte head coach Russ Critchfield said.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Pleasant Valley High product ended up among the top 15 GVC players in six major categories last season. He was fourth in assists (3.9 per game), sixth in scoring (14 points per game), seventh in blocks (one per game), 11th in rebounding (5.7 per game), 12th in field goal percentage (47.4 percent) and 15th in free throw percentage (60 percent). Hills also was an all-state selection. With Hills and UC Irvine-bound forwards Pavol Losonsky and Peter Simek leading the way, the Roadrunners won their first conference title in 15 seasons.
