Breaking News: Javelina Star Running Back Fred Winborn Has Been Kicked off the Team 

KINGSVILLE - Javelina star running back Fred Winborn has been kicked off the team for academic issues.
He led the Hogs in rushing last season. We will have more at 5pm & 6pm.

Texas A&M-Kingsville SID Shane Meling has confirmed that Winborn is off the team for violating University and Team Academic Policy.

Winborn is currently the leading rusher in the LSC, averaging 131.3 yards per game and also has 7 catches for 64 yards.  He also led the LSC in rushing in 2009 with 1,295 yards with 17 TDs, and had 187 yards receiving on 17 receptions with 2 more TDs.

In this week's game notes, Connell Davis is listed as the starter, with Myron Brew as the top backup.

Davis had 491 yards and 8 TDs rushing in 2009, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.  He also caught 16 passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs.  In 2010,  he has 50 yards on 12 carries in limited action.

A&M-Kingsville star Winborn dismissed from team - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller

KINGSVILLE — Texas A&M-Kingsville's football team took a major blow Tuesday when senior running back Fred Winborn was dismissed from the team.

Fourth-year coach Bo Atterberry wouldn't elaborated on the dismissal other than to say Winborn "violated university and team academic policies. That's as far as I'm going."

The defending Lone Star Conference rushing champion again was leading the league with 394 rushing yards. Last year, Winborn topped the league with 1,295 rushing yards en route to first-team LSC South Division honors.

Atterberry said he learned of Winborn's academic woes on Monday and Winborn's dismissal was effective on Tuesday.

"It didn't surprise me," Atterberry said.

Atterberry said the decision will not be reversed.

"He violated university and team academic policies. That's all I've got for today," Atterberry said.

Winborn had experienced some tough academic issues in the spring but was able to work through them. This time, there was no recourse, Atterberry said.

Through three ballgames, Winborn had carried on 61 percent of the sixth-ranked Javelinas rushing plays. He topped the 100-yard mark in two of A&M-Kingsville's three games. Winborn rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown against East Central (Okla.) two weeks ago and 149 last week against Texas A&M-Commerce in the Javelinas' home opener.

Despite losing the LSC's top rusher, Atterberry said Winborn's dismissal does "nothing" to the ballclub.

With Winborn's exit, the door is open for a host of other players to step in. "Oh, for sure," Atterberry said.

First in line would be former Gregory-Portland standout Connell Davis, who has been running as the No. 2 back. A senior, Davis has gained 50 yards on 12 carries this season after running for 491 and eight touchdowns last season. Davis ran for a season-best 35 last week.

Behind Davis would be sophomore Myron Brew, who sat out last season with an injury. Brew played for the first time last week, running for 11 yards on five carries.

Beyond those two, the Javelinas could call on senior wideout Ryan Lincoln, who has the most carries of the receivers operating out of the Javs' Spread attack. Lincoln has rushed six times for 17 yards. His older brother, sophomore Rickey Lincoln, also is an option. The latter Lincoln also got his first action last week, running for nine yards on three carries.
