The South’s dominance in Lone Star Conference crossover games was never more apparent than last week as the Texas teams went 5-0 against the North Division.
The perfect week was a little bit of a shocker as newcomer Incarnate Word beat Central Oklahoma 42-41 in overtime — a week after the Bronchos whipped Tarleton State.
The win is the first for the Cardinals (1-2) in the LSC, although they did go 1-2 against conference teams last year with a win over East Central, a close setback against Eastern New Mexico and a 49-7 whipping at the hands of Midwestern State.
UIW head coach Mike Santiago said he felt like “a weight had been lifted off their shoulders — an anvil,” with the win over UCO.

Former Texas A&I University All-American defensive lineman John Randle headlines the 2010 Texas Sports Hall of Fame class unveiled Tuesday. In total, eight honorees will be inducted into the Hall, located in Waco, at a banquet to be announced for next year.
Randle was a two-time Lone Star Conference Lineman of the Year who became a seven-time All-Pro in stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.
In addition to the Hearne native, the class of 2010 includes former Texas women’s athletic director Donna Lopiano, ex-NFL greats Charley Johnson and Emmitt Thomas, late Dallas Cowboys owner Clint Murchison, former Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson, one-time Texas Rangers headliner Jim Sundberg, ex-Olympic diver Laura Wilkinson and deceased Negro League baseball star Willie Wells.

WAUKEGAN — It’s week three of the NFL season, and all is well if you’re a Chicago Bear — as evidenced Tuesday when veteran guard Roberto Garza walked into the gymnasium at Clearview Elementary School.
“I’m really excited to be here. We’re 2-0. Did everybody watch the (Cowboys) game the other day?” Garza said before third-graders and special-education students who squealed their approval.
The 6-foot-2, 310-pound south Texas native admitted to his audience that “I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan, (so) it felt kind of good to go back there and beat them this weekend.”
He also made sure there were no spies for the Bears’ upcoming opponent.
“No Packer fans here, right?” he asked, drawing no responses in the affirmative and a scattering of boos.
Brought to Clearview as a guest of the United Way of Lake County’s Reading Success program, Garza encouraged the students to read every day, specifically advising them to get their homework done “as soon as you get home” so they could get outside and play.
He said that was his practice growing up in Rio Hondo, Texas, as the son of Mexican immigrants. His dream of becoming an NFL player began, he said, in seventh grade, even though Latinos are a scarce commodity in professional football.
“I hope my message, my story, will help you reach your dreams,” he said. “I had a lot of great opportunities because I stayed in school, I listened to my teachers and I stayed out of trouble. That’s real important ... I was never one of the kids who was in the principal’s office.”

Tarleton's Johnson earns spot on prestigious Good Works Team

As a three-year starter at cornerback, senior Brandon Johnson has meant a lot to the Tarleton State football program on the field.
He's meant even more to both Tarleton and the Stephenville community off of it.
Johnson, a Giddings native and kinesiology major with a 3.5 grade point average, has been named to the 2010 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, an honor Tarleton head coach Cary Fowler calls the highest in all of college football.
"It's the highest honor you can get," Fowler said. "All-American, all-star, all-conference, those honor you for good football. But the Good Works team honors you for something far more important and that's being a positive contributor to your community."
Johnson, 21, says the award means the world to him.
"It's a blessing," Johnson said. "It's everything I work for. I try to be a good leader on and off the field, and I want to give all the glory to God."
Johnson already has 21 tackles, three pass breakups and a forced fumble through three games this season after making 45 tackles, four interceptions and four pass breakups last year. Those 2009 numbers earned him second-team all-conference recognition in the highly regarded Lone Star Conference South Division.
He has helped the Texans finish No. 1 in pass defense and scoring defense in 2008 and No. 3 in both scoring defense and total defense in 2009.
Still, his off-field accolades dwarf his on-field achievements.
Johnson is a two-time member of the Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. He is completely in charge of the Texans' local reading program that visits schools in the Stephenville area, and works with Meals on Wheels to provide elderly residents with meals on a weekly basis. He has participated in the annual Fantastic Field Day to help children with disabilities compete in sporting events for a day, and spends his free time in the summer working with area high school defensive backs.
"He made all our summer workouts, sometimes twice a day," Fowler said. "Then when he can find free time, he's working with kids, not just teaching them how to play defensive back, but setting a positive example for them."
Johnson says he just enjoys giving back to a community that has made it possible for him to continue playing the sport he loves while earning a college education.
"I just like helping out kids," Johnson said. "It means a lot just to give back."
Johnson says he's just doing what's right, but Fowler believes it's more than that. Much more.
"Brandon is a complete guy. He's a 3.5 student and an excellent example of what a person can do when they do everything right," Fowler said. "He's a coach's dream, and he'll be a great coach himself in the near future."
Indeed, Johnson sees himself as a coach someday soon.
"I could see myself coaching at the college level, but first I want to try to play beyond college football," Johnson said. "If that doesn't work out, I might try coaching at my old high school and working toward college."
Fowler would hire him in an instant.
"I'll tell you this much for sure," Fowler said. "As long as I'm a head coach, there will always be a spot on my staff for Brandon if he wants it."
Johnson will join other Good Works honorees in New Orleans in January. They will perform community service projects then be recognized at the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Super Dome.
Only 11 players from NCAA Division I-FBS and 11 from all other NCAA and NAIA divisions are named to the two Good Works teams each year. Johnson is the second Texan to earn the honor in as many years after defensive end Jacob Rowe was named to the team last fall.
"To have two guys make (the Good Works Team) in the last two years is unbelievable," Fowler said. "It shows you how blessed we are as coaches to work with these young men here at Tarleton."

Midwestern State ranked in soccer and cross country
Midwestern maintains No. 2 ranking in NSCAA Divison II Poll
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State maintained its No. 2 position in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/HendrickCars.com Division Poll released Tuesday afternoon.
The Mustangs extended their field unbeaten streak to 26 matches by upping its season record to 5-0 with results over then-No. 10 Incarnate Word and St. Edward's (Texas) last weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.
MSU's No. 2 ranking over the past two reporting periods is the highest since the Mustangs carried the top ranking for three weeks during the 2008 seasons from Oct. 21-Nov. 4. Midwestern has now been ranked in each of the last 49 reporting periods dating back to the 2006 season including 29 weeks ranked within the Top 10.
The Mustangs continue to top the rugged Midwest/South Central Region contingent in the national poll. MSU is trailed by No. 3 Colorado Mines, No. 11 Metro State (Colo.), No. 14 Incarnate Word (Texas) and No. 18 Regis (Colo.).
Midwestern completes its season opening six-game home stand Friday night against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Kickoff off is set for 7 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
Mustangs regain NSCAA national ranking at No. 25
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State moved back into the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/HendricksCars.com Division II Poll at No. 25 as released Tuesday afternoon.
Fueled by the stellar play of junior forwards Kelsey Hill and Lindsay Pritchard who led the Mustangs to a 2-0 win over Newman (Kan.) Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field, the Mustangs reclaimed a national ranking after securing the No. 20 spots two weeks ago.
Midwestern is one of four programs from the South Central Region receiving mention in the national poll joining No. 7 Central Missouri, No. 11 St. Edward's (Texas) and No. 19 West Texas A&M.
The Mustangs (5-1) kickoff Lone Star Conference play Friday afternoon at Abilene Christian. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
Mustangs surge to No. 2 in USTFCCCA Regional Rankings
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State jumped ahead six spots to No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division II South Region Rankings as released Tuesday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association.
The Mustangs placed five runners under the 19-minute barrier while taking second at the 5K Missouri Southern Stampede last Saturday in Joplin.
MSU's strong showing was paced by senior Sydnee Cole who set a new school 5,000-meter record with a time of 18:08.35, but was followed very closely by Brissia Montalvo, who clocked an 18:08.88.
Freshmen Ashley Flores (18:20.05), Janel Campbell (18:29.27) and Cara Mack (18:53.89) rounded out the Mustangs' counters as the team finished second to NCAA Division I Tulsa at the meet as the Golden Hurricane finished with a perfect score.
Midwestern State competes in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree Saturday in Stillwater.
Lady Buffs Remain at No. 22 in AVCA Poll
XINGTON, Ken. – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs remained at No. 22 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll, which was released by the league office on Monday.
The Lady Buffs went 2-0 last week, but did not move up in the poll despite the perfect record. Tampa held down the top spot for the second straight week after receiving 21 of 32 first-place votes. Minnesota-Duluth moved up from the fourth spot to No. 2 this week, while Wayne State moved up from No. 7 to No. 3. Minnesota-Duluth received one first-place nod and Wayne State received eight. Southwest Minnesota State did not receive a first-place nod, but did move up to No. 4 this week. Cal State-San Bernadino received the final two first-place votes and rounded out the top five spots in the poll.
Other major moves in the poll this week found Washburn falling from No. 3 to No. 9 this week, while last week’s No. 9, Indianapolis, fell into a tie for 17th with Seattle Pacific. Cal-San Diego dropped 10 spots this week, falling all the way down to the No. 21 spot. Florida Southern and Regis found their way into the poll this week, while Saint Leo and Cal State-East Bay each fell out.
