Valdosta State and Tusculum Enter Division II Coaches' Poll
Valdosta State beat Newberry, 45-17, and Tusculum moved its record to 3-0 after a 54-30 win over FCS-member Western Carolina, moving both teams into the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll at No. 20 and No. 24, respectively. Grand Valley State still holds down the No. 1 ranking after beating then-No. 11 Hillsdale, 44-41. The Lakers received 23 of a possible 26 first-place votes.
Minnesota-Duluth still sits No. 2 and received one first-place vote while No. 3 North Alabama received the final two first place votes. California (Pa.) and Abilene Christian round out the Top 5. There are two Top 25 matchups in this week’s games. No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth plays host to No. 18 Wayne State (Neb.) while No. 11 Missouri Western State travels to No. 15 Washburn. This will be the Ichabods second straight Top 25 opponent in only three games this season.

LSC Football Weekly Release: Four teams remain undefeated

LAST WEEK
Four Lone Star Conference teams - Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Midwestern State and Angelo State - remain undefeated including crossover victories last week.
RANKED TEAMS
Four LSC squads are ranked in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll (Sept. 13). ACU leads the way at No. 5, while Kingsville is ranked sixth, West Texas A&M ninth and MSU 12th.
CROSSOVER TIME
Week four includes five crossover games. The league has played nine crossover contests this season with the South Division holding a 6-3 advantage.
IN 2010, ALL LSC GAMES COUNT
Due to the addition of Incarnate Word, all 14 LSC football teams will play 10 conference games with four crossover and six division contests. Previously, each team counted only nine games in the conference standings and due to unequal teams in the divisions, three South Division teams played a crossover game that did not count in the standings.
NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
The LSC will play 13 non-conference games this year including five in week one, six in week two and two more in week four. After 11 games, the LSC is 5-6 against foes outside the LSC. Games are scheduled against opponents from the Mid-America Intercollegiate (MIAA), Great Lakes Intercollegiate, Gulf South, Northern Sun and Rocky Mountain conferences along with the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and NAIA ranks. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH OFFENSIVE
Ethan Sharp, University of Central Oklahoma, SO, QB, Eufaula, OK/Eufaula HS
Sharp led UCO to a 37-21 league crossover win over Tarleton State, hitting 19-of-24 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns while adding 25 yards and a TD on six rushes. The sophomore quarterback, making his second career start, connected on 16 of his last 18 passes for 170 yards with TD tosses of 10 and 29 yards. Sharp was 5-of-5 passing for 53 yards and had a key five-yard run on a third-and-two play during a 77-yard TD drive that gave the Bronchos a 10-0 second-quarter lead and his three-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter made it 31-21.
NORTH DEFENSIVE
Dontae Smith, East Central University, JR, CB, Deland, Florida/Deland HS
Smith intercepted two passes, totaled nine tackles (six solo) and had a stop for a 1-yard loss in ECU’s 20-7 home loss to sixth-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville. One of Smith’s pickoffs led to a 72-yard return and the other resulted in a 5-yard return, both in the first half.
NORTH SPECIAL TEAMS
Chris Peoples, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, FR, K, Vian, Okla./Vian HS
Peoples was perfect in place kicking opportunities as he helped Southeastern to a home-opening win over Incarnate Word. Peoples put SE’s first points on the board by drilling a 30 yard field goal. He followed by converting a perfect 5-of-5 on PAT kicks. He also chipped in on kickoffs, averaging 67.8 yards per kickoff, including a pair of touchbacks.
SOUTH OFFENSIVE
Dekarai Pecikonis, Angelo State University, SO, WR, Allen, Texas/Allen HS
Pecikonis used a career-long 83-yard touchdown strike from Josh Neiswander in the second quarter to move past 1,000 receiving yards in his 12th game as a Ram. More importantly for Angelo State, the reception snapped the offense out of an early funk and answered Texas A&M-Commerce’s opening field goal. Pecikonis caught three passes in the game while leading the receiving corps with 111 yards. It marked the second-consecutive game with more than 100 yards for the sophomore from Allen, Texas. Pecikonis sits at 45 catches for 1,029 yards after the second game of his second season in blue and gold.
SOUTH DEFENSIVE
DeIra Glover, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SR, S, Hempstead, TX/Hempstead HS
Glover spearheaded a defensive unit that led the Javelinas to a 20-7 victory at East Central. He led the team with nine tackles and picked up his first interception of the year as part of four turnovers forced by the team. He played a key role in limiting ECU to minus-9 yards rushing and just 87 total yards of offense.
SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS
Chris Jones, Abilene Christian University, R-FR, Coverage, White Settlement, TX/Fort Worth Brewer HS
The ACU Wildcats’ special teams were dominant in Saturday night’s 43-13 win over Northeastern State as they accounted directly or indirectly for 37 of ACU’s 43 points in their second straight win of the season. … ACU blocked three punts – returning one for a touchdown and recovering another in the end zone for a touchdown. ... Jones blocked two of the punts with Nate Bailey picking the first block out of the air and returning it 20 yards for a touchdown. ... Jones – who also had several big hits on the Wildcats’ kickoff team – blocked another punt midway through the third quarter that was again recovered and returned by Bailey, this time to the 12-yard line. ... ACU would score a touchdown two plays later to go ahead 40-13.

LSC VOLLEYBALL
Tarleton State remains undefeated with an 8-0 mark to start the 2010 season, while Abilene Christian posted a perfect record last week at 4-0 to improve to 6-2 overall. After two weeks of tournament action, Lone Star Conference play begins this week. LSC teams will use a one-conference, single round-robin scheduling model, in which each team will play one match against each of the other teams.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Irelis Ilarraza, Tarleton State University, JR, Veroes, Venezuela
Ilarraza led Tarleton last week with a .312 hitting percentage. She had 48 kills and averaged 2.82 kills per game. She was named the 2010 Tarleton Invitational Most Valuable Player after helping the TexAnns set a new school mark for the best start to a season – 8-0. In the match against St. Mary’s, she led Tarleton with 17 kills and had several key points as she hit .517 in the match to push Tarleton past the Rattlers in game five in a win that tied the best start in school history. She added 13 kills in the win over Texas-Permian Basin. She then had 13 kills in the five-game win over Southwest Baptist. As Tarleton trailed 9-6 in game five and then tied the score at 10, Ilarraza had the kill to give the TexAnns the lead for good at 11-10.
Kalynne Allen, Abilene Christian University, SO, New Braunfels, Texas/Bracken Christian HS
Allen had an outstanding tournament earning MVP honors at the St. Edward’s Classic helping the Wildcats to a perfect 4-0 mark. Allen hit .304 with 38 kills while adding eight blocks. She had two stellar matches recording double-doubles against two MIAA teams Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Southern. Against the Bearcats she had 14 kills and 13 digs hitting .458 while adding 13 kills and 11 digs against the Lions hitting over .400 again.
DEFENSIVE
Shawna Hines, Abilene Christian University, SR, Aurora, Colorado/Rangeview HS
All-America Hines moved up the ACU record books to third and is just 12 blocks behind second place on the all time list after adding 18 more blocks this weekend. Hines was not only solid defensively this weekend but led the Wildcats offensively as well. She led the team in hitting at a .398 clip with 39 kills both team highs. Hines hit below .400 only once in four games and twice had double digit kills against Northwest Missouri and Missouri Southern.
Kiara Jordan, Midwestern State University, JR, Gilmer, Texas/Gilmer HS
Jordan once again led Midwestern State back row efforts with 4.39 digs a set as the Mustangs rolled to a 3-1 mark last week to even their record at 4-4. The junior from Gilmer notched a season-high 28 digs in a four-set win at Dallas Baptist last Tuesday before scrambling for 22 more in a five-set victory over St. Mary’s Saturday at the Tarleton TexAnn Invitational.
SETTER
Ijeoma Moronu, Abilene Christian University, SR, Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal HS
Moronu put together one of her better weekends in an already outstanding career. Moronu not only ran the ACU offense to the tune of 149 assists but lead the Wildcats defensively with 51 digs. She also added 12 blocks as she was one of three Wildcats in double digits.
Jessie Hartman, Tarleton State University, JR, San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley HS
Hartman was named the 2010 Tarleton Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the TexAnns to three victories in the event. The TexAnn led the team with 103 assists this week, averaging 6.06 per game. She also led the team with eight service aces as the TexAnns set a new mark for the best start of a season at 8-0. Hartman added four kills and 32 digs this week for the TexAnns. She had 31 assists against St. Mary’s and Texas-Permian Basin and 29 against Southwest Baptist.
