Nothing makes an offensive lineman happier than knowing that he helped open a hole that sprang a running back for a touchdown, except maybe somehow scoring one himself.

Midwestern State guard Bradley Dittmar didn’t have to wait to long to get that feeling as he helped spring Marcus Mathis for a 70-yard touchdown on the Mustangs’ first offensive play of the season.

Now the 6-4, 265-pound sophomore from Fredericksburg is hoping he and his teammates can get that feeling time and time again.

Dittmar’s face lit up as he described the play.

“The tackle, Rickie Gomez, got a pancake block on the defensive tackle and I got a pancake block on the linebacker,” he explained. “Then (Justin) Rideau had a great block downfield to finish it off. That was a great looking play. When a play goes smooth like that, few things feel better. It makes you realize why you like the game so much.”

KINGSVILLE — When talk turns to the kind of football program Tim McCarty is trying to build in his second stint at East Central (Okla.), he points to a program that has been burgeoning some 585 miles to the south.

McCarty and the Tigers are opting to build from within, much the way Texas A&M-Kingsville has done since Bo Atterberry's arrival four years ago. That being said there are an equal number of positives that are outweighed by the negatives.

Right now, ECU is experiencing a few more of the negatives.

"Obviously we're still youthful. We started nine true freshmen last year and played 18 of them in games," McCarty said. "That's just the route we've chosen to go if we're trying to accomplish a program that'll last into the future, kind of like what Kingsville did years ago. They built a program. It wasn't always pretty on the front end, but you're building stuff that lasts," McCarty said. "The kids are competing hard. That's what we're trying to accomplish."

FLF was renamed because a local businessman donated $250,000 for a new artificial turf field. The former Milam Stadium was named for a former SWOSU coach in the 1930s.

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s offense continued to move the ball on Saturday at Angelo State.

Even though the stats don’t reflect it, Greyhounds coach Mark Ribaudo said the defense also played well in a last-minute, 41-38 Lone Star Conference crossover loss to the Rams.

“It might not look like it on paper, but our defense played well,” Ribaudo said Tuesday. “That offense is the best they’ve had since 1997 (when Ribaudo came to ENMU as an assistant).”

DALLAS, Texas – Texas A&M University-Commerce kicked off the week’s activities leading to the 2010 Harvey Martin Classic with a press conference on Wednesday at the Dallas City Hall Flag Room. The Lions host the Angelo State Rams on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

“A&M-Commerce is excited about playing the third annual Harvey Martin Classic in the historic Cotton Bowl, where we will celebrate a great football tradition and commemorate the legacy of a football giant, Harvey Martin,” said Dr. Dan Jones, A&M-Commerce president. “We are proud to count Harvey Martin among our alumni.”

Martin played a vital role in the Lions national championship victory in 1972, and was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 1987. He became the first A&M-Commerce athlete to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

“I got to face Harvey many times,” said Guy Morriss, A&M-Commerce head football coach. “I played offensive lineman and he was a defensive end, and I had a lot of opportunities to smell his breath. He was a premier defensive end and I think he had the respect of every offensive tackle that faced him.”

Volleyball, soccer teams busy - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
SAN ANGELO, Texas — While the Angelo State football team is in Dallas this weekend to face Texas A&M-Commerce in the Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, ASU athletes will also be busy competing in San Angelo.

The volleyball and soccer teams will be hosting tournaments this weekend. The Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational volleyball tournament will run today-Saturday at the Junell Center while the Angelo State Invitational soccer tournament will be Friday-Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.

Both teams are coming off successful showings last weekend. The volleyball team went 2-2 at the Florida Southern Classic while the soccer team went 1-0-1 at the Emporia State Invitational.


Former Carroll standout LeMaire injured in West Texas car crash - Corpus Christi Caller
SAN ANGELO — Former Carroll High School student and current Angelo State University basketball player Leah LeMaire was injured in a one-vehicle car crash Monday night in West Texas, according to Department of Public Safety officials.

LeMaire, a sophomore at Angelo State, was a passenger in a sports utility vehicle in Concho County when driver and classmate Ashley Miller swerved to miss a cow on the road. Miller, 20, steered to the left, but couldn't avoid striking the cow, DPS officials said.

The SUV went into the south ditch before Miller overcorrected back to the right. According to a DPS news release, the vehicle rolled several times and came to rest upside down in the north ditch.

LeMaire, 20, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover, landing on the road, the release states. LeMaire had incapacitating injuries and was taken to Shannon Medical Center by AirMed1.
