Javelinas upset No. 1 Northwest Missouri State - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller
MARYVILLE, Mo. — One game won’t make a football season. But Thursday night’s season opener for Texas A&M-Kingsville will go down as one of the biggest wins in school history, as well as stoking the Javelinas’ confidence for the remainder of the season.
Junior Nate Poppell threw for 258 yards and a touchdown and ran for another in his debut at quarterback and the Javelinas shut down a Northwest Missouri State offense that was returning 10 starters from a team that averaged 42 points and 474 yards of offense en route to the NCAA Division II championship in 2009. The result was a 16-7 win for the 14th-ranked Javelinas over top-ranked Northwest Missouri State at Bearcat Stadium.
“We just came out here and wanted to hit them in the mouth and show them who’s boss,” said sophomore defensive end Matt Romig, who had three sacks. “That was our whole game plan. We just played disciplined football and struck first.”
The top-ranked Bearcats lost their fourth consecutive season opener, and A&M-Kingsville beat a nationally ranked opponent for the second consecutive season.
“We knew they had a powerful offense. It is kind of a surprise that we were able to contain them,” said senior linebacker Marcus Sanders, who tied for the team lead with seven tackles. “But it was all on us, myself and my teammates, the camaraderie. We talked about it. Once we get into what we’ve got to do and do everything right, everything else will fall into place.”

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — NSU coach Kenny Evans emphasized the importance of the first game prior to Thursday night’s opener at Tarleton State. He described the first game as the “pace setter” for the rest of the season. Well if Thursday night’s game is any indication, the RiverHawks could be in for quite a 2010 season. Northeastern State rolled in Stephenville, Texas, and claimed a shocking 31-23 victory over a Tarleton State that was ranked right outside of the top 25 in the AFCA Division II college football poll.
“It was a great team win,” said Evans in a phone interview following the game.
The RiverHawks, who avenged a 6-0 home loss to the Texans in 2009, came out firing, scoring the first 14 points of the game. Freshman kicker Drew Patton got the RiverHawks started with a 44-yard field goal — into the wind — in the first quarter.
“I was scared to death with a freshman kicker out there,” said Evans, whose freshman kicker came up with three field goals in the contest. “But he did a great job.”

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The West Texas A&M Buffaloes appeared to have found just the spark they needed Thursday night to upset second-ranked Grand Valley State, a team that had not lost a regular season home game since 2004.
The offense got hot thanks to the efforts of running backs Tommy Hampton and Kelvin Thompson and the pass-catching of tight end Tyson Williams.
However, the Lakers found a spark themselves - or make that an inferno of a quarterback.
Trailing 24-16 to the Buffs at the start of the fourth quarter, quarterback Kyle McMahon lit a fire under the Lakers, who scored 18 unanswered points, knocking off the Buffs, 34-31, before a standing room only crowd of 13,128 at Lubbers Stadium. The game was nationally televised.
"We should have beat them," said WT head coach Don Carthel, whose team dropped its opening game to GVSU for the second consecutive season. "I think we have it in our heads that we have the capability to beat any team in the country. And we can do that if we continue to work hard and eliminate our mistakes. If we do that, we can beat anybody in the country."

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — It only took the Midwestern State Mustangs one offensive play to show the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys they were in for a long night as senior running back Marcus Mathis ran 70 yards up the middle for a score.
Quarterback Zack Eskridge would add two running touchdowns of his own as well as two TD passes in less than a half of play as No. 17 MSU whipped the Cowboys 52-6 to win their 10th straight season opener.
MSU will now have 10 days off before they return to New Mexico on Sept. 11 for a game against Eastern New Mexico in Blackwater Draw.
The Mustangs finished with 581 yards of total offense — 352 rushing and 229 passing — along with 29 first downs. The Cowboys had just 176 yards and eight first downs.
“I still don’t know how good a team we’ve got,” said MSU head coach Bill Maskill who is 9-0 in season openers. “The first half we could do no wrong and we played some pretty good football. In the second half we got sloppy and had a couple of turnovers, but that’s what’ll happen when you’re up 45-0. We were hoping to get a shutout, but then we fumbled the ball and let them score. But like I told the guys — a win is a win.”

After a 10-9 season last year (4-6 in the LSC), ASU head coach Travis McCorkle hopes that mix, along with depth, will lead to his first trip to the tourney in his third year with the program.
“We have 11 returners,” McCorkle said. “Most of them had good playing time last year. We just had a lot of injuries. So one of the key things we needed to do this year with our recruiting class was to deepen our bench. That is certainly what we have done.”
