If not for the sizable differences between Cowboys Stadium and Bobcat Stadium in Rio Hondo, Chicago Bears offensive guard Roberto Garza may think he’s back in high school when he lines up for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Garza, a standout at Rio Hondo High School who went on to earn Little All-America honors at Texas A&M-Kingsville, will have a large delegation from his hometown in the Valley cheering him on.
By midweek, Garza already had bought 125 tickets for family and friends.
“I’m really looking forward to playing at their new stadium for the first time,” Garza said. “It’s going to mean a lot to me, especially with so many people from back home there to see me play. Dallas has a great team and it will be a hostile environment for us, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Chase Kyser wasn’t necessarily high on Eastern New Mexico University football coach Mark Ribaudo’s radar screen two years ago. He just kept hearing about the then-Roswell Goddard senior.
Eventually, Ribaudo went to see him play and came away impressed.
“I just thought he was a different kind of player,” Ribaudo said of the 5-foot-6 running back-cornerback for the Rockets, Class 4A state champions that year. “I watched him in some playoff games. The more I talked to coaches, the more I liked him.”

No. 5 Abilene Christian 47, East Central 7
ABILENE, TEXAS - Abilene Christian quarterback Mitchell Gale threw a career-best five touchdown passes Saturday night as the fifth-ranked Wildcats whipped East Central (Okla.), 47-7, in a Lone Star Conference game at Shotwell Stadium.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the LSC, while the Tigers are now 0-3 and 0-2 as they lost for the 16th straight time. ACU will be back in action next Saturday when it hosts Tarleton State in the LSC South Division opener for both teams at 6 p.m.
Gale who had thrown four touchdowns in ACU's first two games threw touchdown passes to Edmund Gates (9 yards) and two a piece to Darrell Cantu-Harkless (35 yards and 34 yards) and Emery Dudensing (9 yards and 1 yards).
The Tigers struck first when Tyler Vanderzee hit Tyra Waits with a 70-yard touchdown pass on the fourth play of the game giving them a 7-0 lead just 1:08 into the game. But the Wildcats wasted little time getting on the board, moving 46 yards on 10 plays and taking 3:02 off the clock before Gale hit Gates for the game-tying score.
Those seven points were the first of 47 unanswered points the Wildcats would score in a complete domination of the Tigers. ACU finished the first half with a 44-7 lead and then got a Morgan Lineberry field goal in the third quarter for the final points of the contest.
Gale finished his night midway through the third quarter after completing 23 of 32 passes for 263 yards and those five touchdowns. Cantu-Harkless had a big night with four catches for 90 yards and two scores and 55 rushing yards on six carries.
Gates caught five passes for 55 yards and one score, while reserve running backs Charcandrick West (110 yards on nine carries) and Josh Morgan (52 yards on 10 carries) provided a spark in the running game in the final 30 minutes.
The Wildcat offense finished the night with a season-best 559 yards (308 passing, 251 rushing), while the ACU defense limited the Tigers to a meager 119 yards of total offense, including just 39 on their final 52 plays of the game. For the second straight the Tigers were held to negative yards on the ground as ACU limited them to minus-12 yards rushing one week after Texas A&M-Kingsville held them to minus-9 yards rushing.
No. 6 Texas A&M-Kingsville 21, Texas A&M-Commerce 0
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Despite rainy weather conditions and a soggy field, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team prevailed over visiting Lone Star Conference North Division rival Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday night at Javelina Stadium, 21-0 in front of 8,000 fans.
For the third straight week it was the Javelina (3-0, 2-0) defense that starred in the game. They limited the Lions (1-2, 0-2) to a total of 69 yards of offense including 18 yards rushing on 23 carries.
The Hoggie defense came up with the biggest stop of the game when they led 7-0 with under a minute to play and the Lions had a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. The defense stood strong drawing an offensive pass interference and then sending the Lions backwards. Ahmed Abo-Mahmood’s 36-yard field goal was blocked by Mike Talamantez (Laredo/United HS) to keep the shutout intact.
The #6 Javelinas put the game out of reach in the third quarter when Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) and Delashaun Dean (Fairfield, CA/Fairfield HS).
The Javelinas got on the scoreboard on their first drive of the first quarter. Poppell completed his first pass of the game for 24 yards to Armstrong. Five plays later, Poppell handed the ball off to Armstrong on a jet sweep and he scored from seven yards out with 10:47 left in the quarter.
The rest of the quarter did not see any offense with only one first down gained by either side.
The second quarter was not much better for either offense. The Lions did manage to drive 67 yards to the Kingsville 25-yard line, but a fumbled snap turned the ball over and stopped their momentum.
In the third quarter, the Javelinas were stopped on their first possession, but scored on their second one. Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) started off the drive from their own 21 with a 14-yard line. Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Grant HS) followed with an exciting 37-yard run and then Poppell hit Dean for a 20-yard gain to the Commerce 8-yard line. Two plays later, Poppell hit Armstrong on a five-yard score with 10:29 left in the third quarter.
Later in the quarter, Mardrick Johnson (Lafayette, LA/West Orange Stark HS) picked off an Adam Farkes pass and returned it 12 yards to the Lions’ 20-yard line. Five Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) moved the ball to the 5-yard line where Poppell connected with Dean on his first Javelina touchdown with two seconds left in the period.
The Javelinas emptied the bench in the fourth quarter and a number of players got their first action in a Hoggie uniform.
For the second straight game, the Javelinas held an opponent to zero first downs in the second half. The Lions tallied only five first downs on the game compared to 12 for the Hoggies. The Javelinas entered the game with the #1 overall defense in the nation and improved upon all their season totals. The defense forced four turnovers in the contest and have now gone 165:35 without allowing an offensive score.
Tressor Baptiste (New York, NY/Curtis HS) led the team with five tackles, including three for a loss of nine yards. He also forced a fumble and had a quarterback hurry.
Talamantez picked up his third sack of the season while Lincoln, a wide receiver, was credited with a sack on a special teams play.
The Javelina offense controlled the pace of the game with a 17:30 advantage in time of possession. Winborn went over 100 yards for the second straight week with 149 on 25 carries. Davis added 35 yards on nine carries. Poppell went 6-for-16 passing for 50 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
The Commerce defense was on the field for a long time during the game, but gave up yards grudgingly. They allowed only 243 total yards of offense and limited the Javelinas to 1-for-17 on third down conversions. Danny Mason tallied a game high 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries while Todd Patton had 10 tackles and a force fumble. A.J. Billings had an interception and two other pass breakups.
The Lion offense was led by Marcus Graham who had 45 yards rushing on 10 carries and caught four other balls for nine yards. Taylor Fore added three catches for 28 yards. Farkes finished the game 10-for-32 for 51 yards passing and an interception.
The Javelinas go back on the road next week to Incarnate Word for the inaugural meeting between the two schools in football. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium. The Hoggies are now 3-0 for the second straight season.
No. 9 West Texas A&M 41, Southeastern Oklahoma State 17
CANYON, TEXAS – West Texas A&M quarterback Taylor Harris passed for 562 yards to lead the #9-ranked Buffaloes to a 41-17 win over visiting Southeastern Oklahoma State, Saturday night in front of 10,112 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon, Texas.
The game was the home opener for the Buffaloes, who improve to 2-1 on the year, 2-0 in LSC play, while SOSU drops to 1-2, 1-1 in LSC action.
Harris, who left the game midway through the fourth quarter, completed 35-of-53 passes for 562 yards, just 33 yards shy of the WT all-time single-game mark, set by Keith Null, during an NCAA Playoff game at Abilene Christian, on Nov. 22, 2008.
The Buffs got their offense rolling on their third offensive possession. A 48-yard catch and run from Taylor Harris (Sr-3L, Whitesboro, Texas) to Tyson Williams (Jr-2L, Aldine, Texas) moved the ball to the SOSU 5-yard line. A delay of game penalty on fourth-and-one moved the ball back to the six, from which point Sergio Castillo (Fr-RS, Mission, Texas) booted a 23-yard field goal.
On SOSU’s next possession, the Buffalo defense forced a Savage Storm punt. Buff DB Tarin Lee broke through and blocked Nick Latoof’s effort. The Buffs returned the favor, as Harris was picked off on the ensuing possession.
Three plays later, Buff safety Curtis Jefferson (Jr-2L, Houston, Texas) registered his second interception of the season, picking off Logan Turner’s overthrown pass and returning it 15 yards to the WT 40.
The Buffs were now rolling, as they proceded to score 21 points over the next 4:02.
WT finished the evening with a season-high 656 yards in total offense, while the Buff defense limited SOSU to 335 yards.
WT’s Tyson Williams led all receivers with a career high 217 yards on 13 receptions and one TD. Brittan Golden also topped the century mark, with 103 yards and two TDs on seven catches. Kelvin Thompson led the Buff ground game with nine carries for 49 yards.
SOSU’s Logan Turner completed 17-of-42 passes for 238 yards and two TDs. Robbie Morris had three catches for 51 yards and one TD, while Baylen Laury (35 yards) and DeQUalin Evans (34 yards) also had three receptions apiece. WT’s defense sacked Turner four times for minus-28 yards.
SOSU’s Laury was the game’s leading rusher, with 102 yards on 20 carries.
The Buffs open LSC South play next week when they travel to Angelo State on Saturday, Sept. 25. The contest will be WT’s third road game in four outings this year and will kick off at 6 p.m. CDT.
No. 12 Midwestern State 46, Southwestern Oklahoma 9
WHICITA FALLS, Texas - Zack Eskridge passed for a season high 271 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 12 Midwestern State to a 46-9 win over Southwestern Oklahoma in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs (3-0) broke open a tight contest with 28 points in the third quarter to turn an 11-2 halftime advantage into a commanding 37-point bulge.
Senior running back Marcus Mathis kickstarted the Mustangs with a 36-yard rush down the right sidelines to begin the second half and finished with a game-high 129 yards on 21 carries before Eskridge caught fire.
The Harlon HIll candidate completed 8-of-9 passes for 162 yards including TD strikes to Mathis (23 yards), David Little (13 yards) and Patrick Maull (28 yards) in the third-quarter barrage.
Southwestern Oklahoma benefited from a mishandled a 65-yard punt from Colton Rainey in the first quarter and attempted a forward lateral from the end zone resulting in a safety and a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
Midwestern State retaliated with a safety of their own on a Chase Hooper sack of SWOSU quarterback Mike Van Deripe in the second quarter before the Mustangs took the lead for good on three Jose Martinez field goals from 25, 30 and 26 yards to take an 11-2 advantage before the Mustangs took control in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs finally hit the scoreboard on offense when Isaac Tucker broke a jailbreak screen pass for an 82-yard TD from Dustin Stenta with 12:05 to play. The play netted over half of the Bulldogs' 161 total yards of offense.
MSU redshirt-freshman running back Keidrick Jackson closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run with 8:07 to play.
Midwestern State takes on Central Oklahoma next Saturday at Wantland Stadium in Edmond. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Southwestern Oklahoma (0-3) takes on East Central next Saturday at Norris Field in Ada.
Northwestern State 17, Tarleton State 14
NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA - The Tarleton Texans put up a strong fight and looked better than they have all season from beginning to end, but the visitors fell just short of pulling off an upset over NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Northwestern State (La.) Saturday in Natchitoches, La., 17-14.
The Texans (0-3) pulled within three in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, and the defense had the home team set up for a third down in their own territory, but a 34-yard pass sealed the win for the Demons.
Tarleton falls to 0-3 on the season for the first time since 2006, though the Texans finished that season as co-champions of the Lone Star Conference South Division.
The Texans should have tied the game at 14 in the third quarter, but a holding penalty pushed the ball back, and the drive eventually stalled. Penalties again hurt the Texans as Tarleton was flagged 14 times for 119 yards. NSU was also called for 14 penalties for 140 yards, and five of those came in the fourth quarter.
The Texan defense forced a punt and took over at 4:06, and the offense drove 74 yards on 10 plays in 2:37. A pass interception gave the Texans the ball at the NSU 14-yardline, and three plays later, Doyle punched it in from five yards out. Wiest hit the extra point to make it 17-14 with 1:29 on the clock.
Jerry Owens kicked off 54 yards to the NSU 16 and a return of three yards was stopped by Brandon Johnson for the Texans. Tarleton forced a third and four at the NSU 25, but Harris connected with Brant Legendre for a 35-yard pass to seal the victory for the Demons.
The win ended the Demons15-game losing streak as NSU improved to 1-2 and handed head coach Bradley Dale Peveto his first victory at the helm of the Demons.
Tarleton finished with 246 total yards of offense, including 143 yards in the air and 103 yards on the ground. The Demons rushed for 129 yards and passed for 225 for a total of 354 yards of offense Saturday.
Evan Roberston led the team with 24 carries for 94 yards while Frye had four receptions for 51 yards. Clark Renfro had four catches for 31 yards.
Doyle passed for 143 yards and a touchdown while going 16-for-35.
NSU was led by Paul Harris with 208 yards passing and a score. He was 15-of-23 with an interception.
Endsley had 12 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown while Bradley Brown led the team in receptions with three for 41 yards. Jake Bryan also had three catches, his for 31 yards.
Tarleton will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at Abilene Christian as the Texans open LSC South Division play in Abilene.
Incarnate Word 42, Central Oklahoma 41 OT
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - It was the first win of the 2010 season for Incarnate Word and it was the Cardinals’ first victory as a member of the Lone Star Conference when UIW prevailed in overtime by 42-41 over Central Oklahoma.
UCO (1-2) tied the game at 35-all with 1:19 to go in regulation and then took the lead on the first series of overtime when Josh Billingham ran it in from five yards out. Then came the difference-making play as Incarnate Word put the all-out rush on the PAT and linebacker Dakota Mawyer took it in the shoulder when the snap was bobbled.
Incarnate Word (1-2) then got its chance. The Bronchos forced an incompletion on fourth down but an interference call at the 10-yard line gave the Cardinals a first down and new life. Given another chance quarterback Paden Lynch threw a swing pass to Trent Rios who scored from the nine. Thomas Rebold added the extra point and Incarnate Word won.
But it was the running game which stood out all night. The Cardinals accounted for 304 yards rushing which was four steps short of the school’s team mark of 308. While Lynch was setting the individual mark for a game Rios was just behind with his 127 yards on the ground.
Lynch ran four yards for a score and then threw five to wideout Austin Quinney and UIW had a 14-7 lead after the first period. That reversed in the second as UCO scored twice to once for the Cardinals and the halftime period arrived level at 21 each.
Rios went 15 in the third for the period’s only tally forcing the Bronchos to score three times in the fourth including the one at the very end to get into overtime. UCO’s Ethan Sharp was 30-51 with four touchdowns and 350 total yards.
The extra period win pushed Santiago to a perfect 8-0 in overtime for his career. That includes one other Incarnate Word victory in OT, that one coming last October 3 at Oklahoma Panhandle.
Next up for Incarnate Word is a visit on Saturday, September 25 by Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
North Dakota 55, Northeastern State 14
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The 9,719 fans in attendance at the Alerus Center may have seen something new in the pre-game presentation, but what they saw on the field afterward can only be described as old-fashioned, hard-nosed North Dakota football. In their 2010 home opener and annual Potato Bowl USA game, the Fighting Sioux topped the RiverHawks of Northeastern State 55-14.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Greg Hardin (Bellevue, Neb.), who had a record-setting game at Northern Illinois last Saturday, demonstrated his big-play ability in the first quarter, hauling in a 19-yard scoring pass from Jake Landry (Grand Forks, N.D.), then taking a handoff 63 yards to paydirt on the ensuing possession to put UND ahead 14-0.
Landry finished 10-for-14 for 145 yards to lead UND to a season-high 509 yards of total offense, including 357 rushing yards.
Junior running back Josh Murray (Pepin, Wis.) scampered for 131 yards on 13 carries, including a 9-yard run late in the first quarter that built a 21-0 lead for the Sioux.
On NSU's final drive of the first quarter, senior Ross Cochran (Kenosha, Wis.) stepped up with a big quarterback sack that pushed the RiverHawks back 10 yards. Cochran brought the quarterback down for a second time in the third quarter and tied his season-high two sacks set two years ago at Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 27, 2008).
In his UND debut, true freshman Jake Miller (Bismarck, N.D.) finished with 77 yards on 11 carries, including a pair of touchdowns. He helped UND take a 31-0 lead to the locker room at halftime with a 1-yard touchdown run. The score followed with a 37-yard Zeb Miller (Ankeny, Iowa) field goal in the second quarter.
By halftime, UND had amassed 357 yards of total offense, including 220 on the ground, while holding NSU to 81 yards of offense.
It was Miller time again in the third quarter, as kicker Zeb Miller split the uprights from 28 yards out, and Jake Miller notched his second scoring run of the game with a 39-yard jaunt to the end zone. Brent Goska (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), in relief of Landry, found the end zone from one yard out with 3:51 left in the third quarter, putting the Sioux ahead 48-0.
Linebacker Dan Hendrickson had a lot to do with NSU's inability to gain much-needed yardage. The junior from Minot, N.D., racked up eight tackles, including several highlight-reel stops on kickoff coverage, and added a fumble recovery in the first three quarters of play.
With one more tackle in the final stanza, Hendrickson finished with nine total stops and tied his single-game high set last weekend at Northern Illinois (Sept. 11).
Though holding a solid lead, the Sioux never once lessened the intensity.
The RiverHawks did manage to save themselves from a shutout. At 7:56 of the fourth quarter, Cale Fulps hooked up with Ben Randle for a 7-yard scoring strike to put the visitors on the board for the first time.
UND freshman running back Spencer Bickel (Minot, N.D.) replied with a 2-yard touchdown plunge with 3:14 remaining. NSU added a late scoring run to make it a 55-14 final.

Sharp had the seventh-best passing game in school history during UCO’s thrilling 42-41 overtime loss to Incarnate Word. The sophomore quarterback completed 30-of-51 passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns while adding 27 yards on eight rushes to finish with 377 total yards, the eighth-best game at UCO. He had TD passes of eight, 12, 13 and 54 yards, with his 12-yard scoring toss to Tucker Holland with 1:19 left tying the game at 35 and forcing overtime.

Greve averaged 40.0 yards on seven punts in UCO’s 42-41 overtime loss to Incarnate Word. He had three downed inside the UIW 20, including a season-long 53-yarder at the one in the second half.

Rios had a career-high 127 yards rushing and had a part in three scores as Incarnate Word defeated Central Oklahoma 42-41 in overtime. He threw his first-ever pass and completed it for a touchdown which at the time gave UIW a 21-14 2nd quarter lead. Rios’ 15-yard TD run was the only score of the third quarter and put UIW on top 28-21. His catch for a TD came in overtime on third down and goal from the nine-yard line. He also returned one kickoff for 31 yards. He led all players in the game with his 176 all-purpose yards.

Hooper accounted for six tackles including a sack for a safety in No. 12 Midwestern State’s 46-9 win Saturday night over Southwestern Oklahoma. The sophomore from Houston paced a defense that limited the Bulldogs to seven first downs and 161 yards of total offense.
