Three weeks into the season — several teams played in Zero Week — and some things remain constant in the Lone Star Conference.

The South is again dominating crossover action — 6-3 — and four teams from the South are undefeated.

But taking a closer look and you’ll find that not everything is as expected.

Sure, Incarnate Word having one of the South’s three losses is no surprise.

But no one would have expected the Tarleton State Texans to have contributed the other two losses, falling to Northeastern State (31-23) and Central Oklahoma (37-21).

Not exactly the kind of start former Midwestern State defensive coordinator Cary Fowler planned for his first head coaching experience.

Bradley Dale Peveto just wants to win a game; that much is clear. At this point, the opponent is inconsequential. The fiery head football coach at Northwestern State would take a W against anyone —Michigan State, Vassar, Natchitoches Central. In prior seasons, this week's home game may offer some relief — not that Division II Tarleton State (Stephenville, Texas) is a pushover, but it's a bit more appealing than trips to Houston, Air Force or Baylor.

However, Peveto's 0-13 start affords little room for error. Saturday's game at Turpin Stadium isn't a game the Demons should, win. It's a game they have to win.

"The (kids) need a win badly," Peveto said.

A loss at home to a winless (0-2) Division II team that has access to 36 scholarships compared to NSU's 63 wouldn't offer much hope for the rest of 2010. The Demons are coming off a 19-7 home loss to Samford. Following Saturday's contest, NSU will travel to North Dakota on Sept. 25 before beginning the Southland Conference schedule Oct. 2 against McNeese State at Turpin Stadium.

"My last win was my senior year in high school," NSU sophomore quarterback Paul Harris said. "I haven't tasted one in a long time."

MSU roundup: Mustangs No. 2 in men's soccer poll - Times Record News
Midwestern State moved ahead one spot to No. 2 in the latest National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America Division II Poll released Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs extended their home field unbeaten string to 24 matches by upping its season record to 3-0 with wins over Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado-Colorado Springs last weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.

The ranking is the highest since Midwestern carried the top ranking for three weeks during the 2008 season from Oct. 21-Nov. 4. The Mustangs have now been ranked in each of the last 48 reporting periods dating back to the 2006 season including 28 weeks ranked within the Top 10.

The Mustangs receive their first stiff test of the season when they host the 10th-ranked Cardinals of Incarnate Word in their Lone Star Conference opener Friday night at 7 p.m. the MSU Soccer Field.

The No. 21 West Texas A&M women's soccer team rebounded from a Friday loss and won its third game of the season, 3-0, against Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday.

The Lady Buffs notched their third shutout of the season as well as their third victory by a 3-0 score in front of 25 at The Pitch at Buffalo Sports Park in Canyon.

"I thought we played a little more interested today than we were Friday night," WT coach Chad Webb said. "(Permian-Basin) played really hard. They made things really dangerous for us there at the end of the game, but we kept the shutout. You never want to turn one loss into a losing streak no matter who you play. It's good to get back on the winning track."
