The Abilene Christian game against Northeastern State was played with the benefit of a scoreboard.

A week after blowing a fourth-quarter lead against Grand Valley State, West Texas A&M blows out Southwestern Oklahoma State, scoring 77 points.

Tarleton State begins the season 0-2.

Texas A&M-Kingsville didn’t let down after its Week 1 upset, though a 13-point over East Central isn’t the stuff of bragging.

ACU took care of its business on the road again — this time in Tahlequah, Okla., blocking three punts vs. the RiverHawks and turning two into touchdowns. Darrell Cantu-Harkless scampered 82 yards for a second-half score as the No. 5 Wildcats won, 43-13.

ADA, OKLAHOMA — In the first two ballgames of the season, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s defense has restrained one of the country’s most potentially explosive offenses and choked another that is trying to find itself.

And there is no one more pleased with that than Javelinas quarterback Nate Poppell.

As the Javelinas have made tentative moves toward developing as an offense — they took a few steps forward in Saturday’s 20-7 win over East Central (Okla.) — their defense has held strong against defending NCAA Division II champion Northwest Missouri State and the Tigers.

“It really is a great comfort. But I hope we can start to help them out a little more,” said Poppell, who helped guide the 2-0 Javelinas to a 452-yard offensive night against winless ECU. “I think we can start to get some things clicking on offense and start to put pressure on people and help our defense out a lot.”

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - West Texas A&M quarterback Taylor Harris had the second half off Saturday night as the Buffs exploded on Southwestern Oklahoma State in the first 6:45 - scoring 21 points - in a 77-14 win at Fast Lane Field.

Harris still had a record-setting performance in only half a game as the Buffs rested their starters in the second half and emptied their bench.

Harris finished 13-of-22 passing for 304 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. The senior from Whitesboro entered the game needing only 205 yards to move past Grady Benton and into No. 5 all-time in WT career passing yards. Harris has 5,718 yards passing and sits behind No. 4 Tod Mayfield (7,424 yards).

With nine regular-season games left, it is possible Harris could finish his career ranked second in career passing yards behind No. 1 Keith Null (9,385 yards).
