Javelinas offense slows, but Winborn explodes - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
KINGSVILLE — The take from an offensive standpoint in last week's victory at East Central (Okla.) was fairly obvious. Yes, Texas A&M-Kingsville was able to move the football almost at will but was lacking on the point-production side in the 20-7 win.
The upside is that senior tailback Fred Winborn had his breakout game, and the sixth-ranked Javelinas are hoping that sets a tone upon which they can bank for the balance of the season.
The North Hollywood, Calif., native bulled his way for 163 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Tigers. It was a game Winborn was seeking after running for 82 tough yards and no scores in the season-opening victory against then-top-ranked Northwest Missouri State.
"Oh, man, every week I feel like I have something to prove. We've got a lot of new offensive linemen who just got here," Winborn said. "It's going to be a week by week thing. It's going to start in practice and finish on the field. So every week we should be getting better and better as a whole group, a whole unit."

NSU's Peveto in awkward position - Roy Lang III, Shreveport Times
Bradley Dale Peveto has embraced the role of linebackers coach at Northwestern State University. That's not earth-shattering. However, combine that with the fact Peveto is the head coach of the Demons; now he's in rare company. Saturday, one of the potential downfalls of the dichotomy was revealed.
During NSU's 19-7 loss to Samford at Tuprin Stadium, the Demons' offense couldn't stay on the field. It missed its first 11 third-down conversion attempts. Unfortunately, that didn't give the head coach, who was making adjustments with his linebackers, time to see his team with the football.
"In that particular game, we didn't make a lot of first downs and I was very tied up," Peveto said. "We were adjusting (on defense) more than normal."
The Demons (0-2) trailed 19-0 and were on the wrong side of a 404-82 difference in total yards late in the third quarter. NSU tied a school record with 11 punts.
"I can't really speak to (the struggles on offense)," Peveto said afterward. "I'm on the sideline making defensive adjustments."
Tigers come to town in home opener - Brandon Tripp, ACU Optimist
The Wildcats will be at home for the first time this season after taking their show on the road in weeks one and two.
The East Central Tigers roll into town on Saturday to face ACU for the third time in as many seasons in a Lone Star Conference crossover game. The Wildcats have won the last two meetings by blowout margins of 66-7 in 2008 and 43-6 in 2009.
Quarterback Mitchell Gale made his first start against this team last season in the 43-6 victory. Gale threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his collegiate debut – and has not relinquished the starting role since.
The key to another victory for ACU, both in the season and this series, is another stout defensive performance from the Wildcats.

Northeastern State will take a break from NCAA Division II competition this week to travel to North Dakota. The RiverHawks will take on a University of North Dakota team that is 0-2 — but let the record fool you, says Northeastern State coach Kenny Evans. In the first two weeks of the season "they played two Division I, bowl-level teams," Evans said. "They've had some tough competition. They played Northern Illinois very close this last week."
The Fighting Sioux, who will host the RiverHawks during the Potato Bowl USA festival, are coming off a 23-17 loss to NIU. And Evans has warned his team about the Fighting Sioux's hard-nosed demeanor
"They (North Dakota) can be described in one word: tough," said Evans, whose team will look to rebound from a 43-13 rout at the hands of Abilene Christian last week. "They're a physically tough football team. And we'll have to be ready to respond and play physical football for four quarters."
If the RiverHawks are to improve to 2-0 on the road, they will have to fix what ailed them against Abilene Christian. NSU allowed the Wildcats to block three punts and return another for a touchdown.
"We have to make changes with our punt team," said Evans, whose punting unit allowed 21 points and allowed the Wildcats to block their third punt of the night, which set up another TD. "Because of what we did, we gave up 28 points with that one unit."
Oklahoma: QB Ethan Sharp - Scott Munn, The Oklahoman
Sharp's preparation impresses UCO coach
The decision to make Ethan Sharp the No. 1 quarterback at Central Oklahoma came long before the Lone Star Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday. Bronchos football coach Tracy Holland said Sharp won the job a few weeks ago after he watched the sophomore prepare for last Saturday's game vs. Tarleton State.
The superb performance against Tarleton was just gravy.
The Lone Star named Sharp its North division Offensive Player of the Week. The Eufaula product threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns in UCO's 37-21 win over the Texans at Wantland Stadium. Sharp added a 2-yard TD run.
"He is a great, young quarterback. He gave us a great game against Tarleton,” Holland said. "That (award) is well deserved.”
