Glover leads Javelinas defense that shares glory - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times 
KINGSVILLE — During the 2009 season, safety DeIra Glover was Texas A&M-Kingsville's leading tackler with 89 stops.

At the rate the senior is on to begin this season, Glover will be hard-pressed to equal or surpass that total. And that is just fine with him. The tackle totals and the entire defensive load has been spread across the board this season, and with astonishing results numbers-wise.

"That's how I like it. I was telling my dad not too long ago that I don't think I'm going to be able to get 89 tackles this year because we've got so many linebackers flying around, D-linemen flying around," Glover said, flashing a wide smile. "It's a good thing. He told me that if a safety is making 89 tackles the defense isn't doing that good. So if the linebackers are making all the tackles that's fine with me, as long as we're doing our jobs."

AROUND THE STATE
→It will not be the biggest football game in the state — but something will have to give Saturday in Ada. Southwestern State (0-3) and East Central (0-3) play a Lone Star Conference North division game at Norris Field.  Southwestern State was 1-10 last season, its lone victory a 14-13 decision against East Central. The host Tigers have not triumphed since October 2008, against Southwestern State.

→Central Oklahoma (1-2) will play Midwestern State (3-0, No. 10 NCAA II) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Edmond. UCO coach Tracy Holland said redshirt freshman Landon Greve has replaced senior Carter Whitson as the No. 2 quarterback behind Ethan Sharp.

Holland said Whitson will play receiver "because he's a good athlete who wants to be on the field.” Whitson has one catch for a 13-yard touchdown.

Greve is also the Bronchos' punter. He was selected Lone Star North division Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 40 yards on seven punts during last Saturday's 42-41 overtime loss at Incarnate Word.

Wallace leads MSU to win - Times Record News
When Midwestern State needed a finish in Thursday night’s Lone Star Conference contest against Incarnate Word, the Mustangs need only to turn to Caitlin Wallace.

The freshman from Amarillo came up clutch in crunchtime, delivering the Mustangs final four kills and was in on a pivotal block to turn the tide as MSU came away with a 25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24 win to improve to 7-6 on the season and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

Freshman Julie Kennedy hit .467 and tallied eight kills to help Angelo State University defeat Texas A&M-Commerce 25-22, 25-16, 25-18 Thursday night. The Rambelles limited the Lions to a .082 hitting percentage, while ASU notched 36 kills and four total team blocks.

WT volleyball wins 52nd straight in LSC - Amarillo Globe News
The No. 22 West Texas A&M volleyball team owns the seventh-longest conference winning streak in NCAA Division II volleyball history after sweeping the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs on Thursday night in Weatherford, Okla.

WT extended its Lone Star Conference winning streak to 52 matches with a 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 win in front of 300 fans at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse - a streak that dates to 2005.

No. 2 Mustangs have offensive punch ready for UT-Permian Basin - Times Record News
No. 2 Midwestern State solved its goal scoring issue in a big way with a pair of 6-1 decisions over No. 10 Incarnate Word and St. Edward’s last weekend at the MSU Soccer Field to extend its home-field unbeaten string to 26 matches.

Midwestern State closes a six-match season-opening home stand by playing host to Texas-Permian Basin tonight. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“Our midfielders are coming up and wanting to score, and that’s helped us substantially after not playing well early in the season,” MSU coach Doug Elder said. “We came out with fire, intensity and with attitude on our home field last weekend and really took the game toward the opposition. We’ll have to continue to do that to be successful.”

The Hilltoppers lead the all-time series between the two schools 4-8-1 but the Rambelles have won the last two meetings, including a 1-0 win last year in San Angelo. ... ACU's Mongin hopes to double up at region tennis tourney - Joey Richards, Abilene Reporter News
Abilene Christian’s Julia Mongin hopes to win two titles at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Central Region women’s tournament this weekend in Abilene.

Mongin and Jaclyn Walker are the favorites in the doubles competition, while Walker is seeded No. 1 in singles and Mongin is No. 2. The champions in each event advance to the ITA Small College National Championship Tournament in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 14-17.

Mongin, a sophomore from Jaurnay, France, teamed with Walker last spring and played well, and Mongin said she likes playing with the Abilene High grad.

“She’s the best player on the team,” Mongin said. “She’s really good in doubles and singles. She’s a good partner.”

Daniel Kiptoo, East Central University, Jr., Eldoret, Kenya
Kiptoo placed fifth at the 8-kilometer Missouri Southern Stampede last Saturday by finishing in a time of 24:20.50. It was the best individual finish ever by any ECU runner at the Missouri Southern event and set an ECU school record. His time beat his previous personal-best time by nearly a minute and a half as the Tigers finished fourth in the team standings.

Sydnee Cole. Midwestern State University, Sr., Phillipsburg, Kan., Phillipsburg HS
Cole set a school 5,000-meter record while leading Midwestern State to a stellar second-place showing at the Missouri Southern Stampede. The Phillipsburg, Kan. native covered the course in 18:08.35 to place 17th in the field of 302 as the Mustangs finished ahead of two teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Preseason Top 25 including No. 8 Missouri Southern and No. 19 Pittsburg State.

Mohammed Noor, Eastern New Mexico University, turned in a sixth-place finish at the Texas-Tech Open, finishing the 8k run with a time of 25:12.74. He was the third Division II runner to cross the finish line.
Adrienne Montoya, Eastern New Mexico University, shattered the ENMU 5k record, finishing in 19:21.59 at the Texas Tech Open, last week. Her performance earned a 10th-place finish. She was the top Division II finisher at the meet.
