SAN ANTONIO — Thirty-eight months ago, Mike Santiago began his journey as the new football coach at Incarnate Word, which was building a fledgling program.

Since then, he has recruited, bought equipment, sat in on budget meetings and sat in on meetings concerning the construction of Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium on the UIW campus.

"I wore a construction hat for about a year and a half, and I'm the last guy that should be wearing a construction hat," a laughing Santiago said. "I sat in construction meetings and not only didn't I know the answers I didn't understand the questions. I learned that water actually comes up through the ground here in San Antonio so building a field became a chore.

"The football stuff was easy. We started recruiting and getting players. I learned a lot about purchasing equipment, which, really as a coach, you don't do much at most levels," Santiago said. "But it was a great experience. I learned. It was just really a lot of fun and I wore a lot of different hats."

UIW sophomore running back Trent Rios saw his football career flash before his eyes when a serious leg injury that required surgery ended his senior season at Smithson Valley in 2007.

Dragged from behind with a horse-collar tackle as he scored a touchdown against East Central in a second-round playoff game, Rios fell to the ground with a broken fibula in his left leg and torn ligaments in his left ankle.

In pain as he made his way to Smithson Valley’s locker room on crutches after the game at the Alamodome, Rios wondered whether he would ever play football again.

The only numbers that will matter to the West Texas A&M Buffs on Saturday night will be on the scoreboard, making sure their total is greater than the number the Angelo State Rams put up.

However, No. 54 does carry a bit of significance.

Buffs head coach Don Carthel, in only his sixth season, can tie the coach for whom the Buffs’ stadium is named — the legendary Frank Kimbrough — for victories at WT.

Carthel sits at 53-13, one game behind Kimbrough at 54-52-2.

Midwestern State’s Jose Martinez couldn’t remember the last time he had a kick blocked before his first field goal attempt in last Saturday night’s win over Southwestern Oklahoma State.

And the former Hirschi Husky was surprised that the Bulldogs even got to the 29-yard try.

The senior, however, didn’t let that bother him — despite a heavy rush the entire night — as he came back with three field goals and three extra points in the Mustangs’ 46-9 win.

He ended up getting Lone Star Conference special teams player of the week honors.

“I had my head down the whole way,” Martinez said of the attempt. “I don’t pick my head up until I’m through with the kick. But on that one I had to pick myself up. I couldn’t believe I had it blocked. Lee Scott (former MSU kicker) said I got hit and did a 360 before falling. I was mad. It was the first one I had blocked since my freshman or sophomore year.”

Rambelles open LSC play with new school - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
Ready or not, the Angelo State women’s soccer team opens Lone Star Conference play Friday against Incarnate Word.

The Rambelles host the Cardinals on Saturday in not only UIW’s first LSC soccer game but also the first conference battle between the two schools in any sport.

UIW officially joined the LSC over the summer.

ASU enters the game with a 3-2-1 record. The Rambelles snapped a two-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Dallas Baptist on Saturday. Freshman Destin Connally scored her first collegiate goal and Melanie Peterson recorded her third shutout of the season for ASU.
