Much of my sports writing career has involved covering the Ray family.
My first year here at the paper, I was in the press box when Bobby Ray won his only district title as Archer City’s head football coach.
I covered the coach’s two sons, Mike and Jeff, when they played high school basketball for their dad in Archer and later at Midwestern State where both were on teams that went to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City.
And, of course, I have covered all of Jeff Ray’s 12 seasons as MSU’s head basketball coach — many with his dad sitting beside him as a volunteer coach.
So, like many of you who knew him, I am feeling a great loss today over the death of the 72-year-old patriarch of the Ray family.
“Fuzz” — as Bobby Ray’s friends called him — was both the head football and head basketball coach in Archer when I came to work here at the newspaper.
Go to the Times Record News for the rest of the story.
