LSC Softball Weekly Release

The 2009 Lone Star Conference softball season continues with a full slate of games this week. In games last week, the South Division was 27-8, while the North was 16-14. Angelo State remains undefeated after a perfect 6-0 week.

Players of the Week

LSC North Hitter
Kasey Barber, East Central, So., Third Baseman, Elgin, Okla./Elgin High School
Barber batted .600 with three homers, two doubles, six runs scored and 11 runs batted in as East Central got off to a 3-1 start on the 2009 season. Barber was a combined 9-of-15 in the four games with two walks. She homered twice on Friday - once in each game - as ECU swept Washburn in the Broncho Invitational. She then homered in the Lady Tigers' 15-7 victory over Northwest Missouri State on Saturday. Barber posted an on-base percentage of .647 and a slugging percentage of 1.333 in the four games. She also played error-free at the hot corner as she recorded two putouts and assisted on five other plays. Barber was voted LSC North Freshman of the Year in 2008.

LSC North Pitcher
Katie Petersen, Midwestern State, Jr., Pitcher, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS
The LSC North Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year went 2-0 and delivered her 21st career shutout while helping Midwestern State to a 4-0 showing at the Texas Woman's Invitational. Petersen allowed an unearned run on seven hits to post a 0.00 ERA in 12 innings of work while striking out 14 and walking one. She passed former All-America Brittany Willson to become MSU's career shutout leader when she allowed five hits while striking out nine in an 8-0 run-rule win over No. 19 Central Missouri on Friday. Petersen followed that effort by allowing an unearned run on two hits in a 7-1 win over No. 3 St. Edward's. She struck out five and walked one against the Hilltoppers.

LSC South Hitter
Kristen Cruickshank, Eastern New Mexico, Jr., P/First Base, Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley HS
Cruickshank turned in a prolific week at the plate in the Schutt Sports Leadoff Classic, batting .563 with six home runs including a walk-off blast and 16 runs batted in. He slugging percentage over the five games was a blistering 1.526 with seven extra base hits in 19 at bats. She also posted a 3.00 earned run average on the mound and posted a 2-0 record with 11 strike outs and just four walks over 15 innings.

LSC South Pitcher
Chelsea Nelson, Angelo State, Jr., Pitcher, Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S
Nelson picked up four wins and a save as she was named the MVP of ASU Blue &Gold Classic over the weekend. Nelson boasted a 1.24 earned run average and held opponents to a .173 batting average as the Rambelles picked up six more wins to improve to 13-0 on the season. Nelson struck out 18 hitters while issuing just three walks on the weekend.
