Cooper: Buffs won't look past Greyhounds
Eastern New Mexico is 12 games under .500, is winless in the Lone Star Conference South Division and owns a seven-game losing streak.

But don't for a second think that West Texas A&M will overlook the Greyhounds when these teams meet at 8 tonight at First United Bank Center in Canyon.

"Have you seen who we have lost to?" said West Texas A&M men's coach Rick Cooper, speaking of defeats to Southeastern Oklahoma State (3-17 overall) and Adams State (4-15 overall).

Lady Buffs, young Zias meet in LSC South game
The Eastern New Mexico University Zias had no seniors last year in a five-win season that included only two in Lone Star Conference South Division play.

This season, the Zias still don't have a senior on their roster and are still struggling to find the win column on a consistent bases in head coach Linden Weese's third season.

They enter today's division matchup against No. 9 West Texas A&M having lost seven straight games, including six by eight points or less.

A&M-Kingsville hoops faces Angelo St. in home-and-home
KINGSVILLE — Texas A&M-Kingsville gets a shot at Angelo State, fellow tri-leaders in the Lone Star Conference South Division men's basketball chase, in a home-and-home series that begins tonight in San Angelo and concludes Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

A&M-Kingsville's women, meanwhile, attempt to improve on their third-place standing in the South when they face the Rambelles in similar home-and-home contests.

Tied at 4-1 atop the South men's standings with ASU and Midwestern State, the Javelinas (14-6) have won seven of their last eight ballgames. The Javs have added incentive when they face the Rams. ASU swept the series from A&M-Kingsville last season, blocking the Javs from the postseason.

Mustangs will have to take care of the ball against TexAnns' press
There should be lots of pressure on both teams tonight as the Tarleton State TexAnns visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a Lone Star Conference South game against the Midwestern State Mustangs.

Some of the pressure will come from the visitors as they will employ a full-court press most of the night.

But both teams are under pressure to get a win as the game will be the end of the first half of the LSC South season.

Midwestern State coach Jeff Ray will be quick to tell you that good health is one of the main reasons his basketball team has won 12 of its last 13 games and is currently tied for first place in the Lone Star Conference South Division.

So Ray is keeping his fingers crossed that he won’t be short-handed in the big man department when Tarleton State comes to town tonight.

MSU receives $1M donation
Midwestern State University honored Hollis R. and Donna Sullivan on Monday as the couple made the first-ever $1 million gift to the school’s athletic department.

The announcement was made at a luncheon with school officials and members of the athletic department.

Recruiting: National Signing Day arrives
Today marks the first day of the regular signing period for college football, soccer, track and cross country — better known as National Signing Day because it’s the day when most college football prospects sign their national letters-of-intent.

Around Comal County, nine football players are expected to sign with colleges, as well as three girls soccer players from Smithson Valley High School.

Javs baseball ready to prove polls wrong
KINGSVILLE — When Jason Gonzales came in to replace Russell Stockton as Texas A&M-Kingsville's baseball coach, he brought a new, refreshed attitude. The Javelinas bought into it, and the optimism couldn't be at more of a fever pitch.

Few outside of Kleberg County give A&M-Kingsville much hope in duplicating last season's Lone Star Conference championship. But the Javelinas are hoping to parlay the momentum from winning that title into this season, which begins tonight against Houston-Victoria at Whataburger Field.

"Big time. We got a ring and we're definitely proud of that," said first baseman Thomas Miller, the team's top returning hitter. "But at the same time, we're ranked to finish sixth in this conference so we've got a lot of work to do. Nothing is going to get handed to us.

"As of right now, everyone looks at us as one of the middle-of-the-pack teams so we're excited to go out and prove some people wrong," Miller said.
