Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Benita Sanchez and Angelo State’s April Haywood earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards
Southeastern Oklahoma State senior 1B Benita Sanchez has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player of the Week while Angelo State’s April Haywood earns Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Week notice for the week ending Sunday, February 8, 2009, it was announced today.
Benita Sanchez, a senior from Farmington, N.M., hit .737 for the opening week of the 2009 season, collecting 14 hits in 19 at-bats. She had an .800 on-base percentage, adding six walks to her 14 hits, reaching base a total of 20 times in her 25 plate appearances. With two home runs, a pair of doubles and seven RBI last week, she is slugging 1.211 from the leadoff position and has played error-free defense at first base. After a Tuesday doubleheader sweep of Southern Arkansas, Sanchez was named the MVP of the St. Mary’s Tournament, where she hit .688 while the Savage Storm went 4-1 on the weekend.
April Haywood, a junior pitcher from Tacoma, Wash., was named to the All-Tournament Team at the St. Mary’s Division II Classic after helping the Rambelles to a perfect 5-0 record at the event. Haywood went 3-0 in the circle with a 1.00 ERA, including a 7-2 win over No. 3 St. Edward’s, giving up two unearned runs. She struck out 23 hitters in 21 innings of work. Against St. Edward’s, she fanned 13 hitters, just two shy of the Angelo State record. Offensively, Haywood went 2-for-20 at the plate with two home runs and eight RBI.

Sanchez helped Southeastern get off to a 6-1 start through the first weekend of the season. Sanchez is hitting .737 on the young season, collecting 14 hits in 19 at bats. She is also posting an .800 on-base percentage, adding six walks to her 14 hits, reaching base a total of 20 times out of 25 plate appearances. She has connected on a pair of home runs, posted three doubles and scored 11 runs. She is slugging 1.211 on the year, and is playing error free ball.

Johnson helped Southeastern off to a 6-1 start to the season, including wins over St. Mary's and No. 3 St. Edward's. She combined with Amanda Tanner to throw the 13th no-hitter in school history, marking the fifth no-no she has been a part of. She is 2-0 on the season and has posted a 1.24 ERA through the opening weekend, but has held hitters to a paltry .056 batting average. She has also struck out 34 opposing hitters, averaging out to two K's per inning pitched.

Lopez belted five home runs and boasted a 1.136 slugging percentage as the Rambelles got off to a 7-0 start. In Wednesday's season-opening 12-2 win over Incarnate Word, Lopez became the first ASU player to hit two home runs in a game since the 2006 season. She then added three home runs during the St. Mary's Classic, leading the Rambelles to a perfect 5-0 record in the event and the tournament title. She went 8-for-22 from the plate with seven runs scored and 10 RBI. Seven of her eight hits were for extra bases, adding two doubles. In addition, Lopez threw out 7-of-10 base runners on the week.

Lindsey Wright, West Texas A&M, Jr., pitcher, Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite
Wright pitched a complete-game no-hitter in the Lady Buffs' season-opener, taking a 10-0 win at UT-Permian Basin. She then followed with a perfect game in the finale, winning 8-0 in five innings. Both feats are ‘firsts' for the Lady Buffs' program. Wright struck out five while walking one in her no-hitter, and fanned five in her perfect outing.

No offense to the WT pitcher, but she was pitching against a team that went 9-35 last year.
Courtney Rigamonti went 3-0 last week, including 2 wins againts the #3 team in the nation. That's more impressive to me.
Is that #3 team a division 2 college? What was WT's record last year? The no-no was a 3-2 pitch away from a perfect game. That would have been 2 in a row. The other team was standing and they were holding bats, not a group of 9 cadavers.

If you want to compare, Tarleton's pitcher, Lauren Zearfoss, had a 3-1 record with 26 strikeouts and a 0.94 ERA against No. 16 and several other regional teams from last year.
But almost to no-nos against anyone is a very nice achievement.
You'll have to forgive my bias. I know Linsey Wright's mother. Lindsey threw a no-hitter in the season opener and followed it up with WTAMU's first ever perfect game. I don't know what the odds are but to complete such a feat having thrown 119 combined pitches has to be up there.
