Lady Buffs overcome knee injury to BristerWICHITA FALLS - The 36-point drubbing that West Texas A&M's Lady Buffs put on Midwestern State on Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum might have been only a small part of a much-bigger story.
With 11:27 left in the first half, senior All-American Emily Brister suffered what might be a catastrophic knee injury after she had stolen the ball and was headed to the basket much like she has done countless times in a great career.
At the time, the Lady Buffs were leading by three points in a game they went on to win 72-36, holding an opponent to a season-low point total.
Rabb’s FTs give MSU victory as coach’s father enters final days
When Earl Rabb hit five free throws late in the game, Midwestern State head coach Jeff Ray told his assistant Rob McIlhaney, “My dad is lying in bed dying, but he is literally helping us win a basketball game tonight.”
Bobby Ray’s extra work with Rabb certainly helped Midwestern State knock off West Texas A&M, 85-75 Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Rabb had a double-double with a career high 21 points and 10 rebounds, but despite a great all-around game by the MSU point guard, it was his 7-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line that WT coach Rick Cooper was talking about when this one was over.
“He made us pay by hitting those free throws,” Cooper said of the 42.4 percent free-throw shooter.
“He was in my head when I was shooting those free throws,” Rabb said of Bobby Ray. “I could hear him telling me what to do just like he did in all those extra practices together.”
WT loses Brister, but has no trouble with MSU
Last week the Midwestern State Mustangs lost a key player in the first half and things quickly went downhill for the home team.
Wednesday night it was the visiting West Texas A&M watching three-time All-American Emily Brister forced out of the game early with a knee injury — it barely slowed the Lady Buffs down.
The seventh-ranked Lady Buffs turned a comfortable halftime lead into a blowout with a 13-0 run out of the intermission on the way to a 72-36 win over the helpless Mustangs in front of 1,271 fans in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Buffs tumble to Mustangs
WICHITA FALLS - Midwestern State coach Jeff Ray watched his struggling free-throw shooter Earl Rabb can 7-of-12 from the line, score 21 points and grab 10 rebounds Wednesday night against West Texas A&M.
That from a guy making 44 percent of his free-throw attempts.
"My dad is lying in a hospital bed dying, and he's still helping us win a basketball game," said an emotional Ray, minutes after Midwestern State defeated WT, 85-75, in a Lone Star Conference South Division game with first place on the line at D.L. Ligon Stadium.
Ray's dad, Bobby Ray, has been an unpaid assistant with Midwestern State this year. Bobby Ray had a massive stroke last weekend and has been hospitalized.
"My dad and Earl had bonded," Jeff Ray said. "He would spend 30 minutes after most practices working on free throws with Earl."
SWO FOOTBALL ADDS ANOTHER ASSISTANT
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – New Southwestern Oklahoma State University football coach Dan Cocannouer stretched his search across a number of states to grab his newest assistant coach. Dustin Hada, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University, was announced as the Bulldogs new offensive line coach Thursday.
The hire marks Cocannouer’s second since he was named head coach in December. One spot on the Cocannouer’s staff of assistants remains and is likely to be reserved for a linebacker coach.
“I’m very excited about coming to Southwestern and working for Coach Cocannouer,” Hada said. “Southwestern offers a great opportunity to test yourself coaching with, and against, some of the top teams and players in Division II with the Lone Star Conference.”

Now, he'll take his talents to West Texas A&M, where the talents that saw him garner District 1-4A Player of the Year honors as a senior figure to fit nicely in a Buffaloes offense that threw for a whopping 5,565 yards in 2008.
Tough call: Wylie's Dennis picks Tyler JC over ACU, Tech
When Brooke Dennis burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2006, it was assumed that the Wylie tennis standout would eventually play at the collegiate level.
The only question was where.
Dennis, now a senior, answered that question Wednesday, when she signed her national letter-of-intent to play at Tyler Junior College.
Dennis, who held offers from Texas Tech and Abilene Christian University, said she had a tough time deciding between the three programs. But eventually, the opportunity to earn a full scholarship and play early for coach John Peterson at TJC was just too much to pass up.
"I could have gone to some bigger schools, probably, but not on a full ride or anything," Dennis said. "I would have probably played but not as much, where I can go (to Tyler) and be in the lineup, get as good as I want to get and move on to another Division I school."
Calallen’s big five sign national letters
National signing day in colleg football means a lot to family and friends. Mosty because it’s a sign some parent’s don’t want to see, their son taking the next step in their young adult life.
A move that can take their child far way or if they are lucky, keep them close to home.
Last week, five Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcat football players inked their names, along with their parents signature, to continue their post-prep football careers at programs as far away as New Mexico and as close as San Antonio.
