LSC Roundup 2-11

Javelinas softball rallies again for a win
KINGSVILLE -- Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team has had some adversity thrown at it through six ballgames this season. Six times, the Javelinas have answered.

The Javelinas best start in 13 seasons of play continued Tuesday night when they swept a doubleheader from St. Mary's at Hubert Field. Senior shortstop Meisha Patterson delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the 5-4 win in the opener and then keyed a seven-run outburst with a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning of the nightcap as the 6-0 Javelinas romped past the Rattlers 10-6.

In five of the six victories, A&M-Kingsville has had to come from behind.

"I'm not too much about that one, but it's good for a gut check for the girls," second-year Javs coach Blake Miller said. "I imagine it's a good thing to say at the first of the year. Hopefully we can get on top of it and we're not worrying about getting behind and we keep on pounding people out."

ACU stays 2nd in LSC South
Texas A&M-Kingsville made Abilene Christian coach Shawna Lavender squirm a little at the end.

Trailing by double figures most of the game, including 16 with five minutes left to play, the Lady Javelinas made a late run, but ACU was 8-of-10 at the foul line in the final 52.77 seconds to seal a 78-70 victory in a Lone Star Conference South Division women's basketball game Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum.

"Kingsville is tough," Lavender said. "We were up 16 with about five minutes left, and I looked at (my assistants), Terri (Pertuit) and Alex (Guiton), and said, 'It's still not enough.' Kingsville, they can score a lot of points in a hurry. The same thing happened to us there. We had a big lead and let them get back in the game late. Fortunately, we played well enough most of the game that we were able to hold them off at the end, knock down some free throws."
