Chris Johnson and his Incarnate Word teammates went into Wednesday's Lone Star Conference South Division opener with West Texas A&M determined to make a statement.

First, they wanted to bounce back from last week's loss to Texas A&M-Commerce. But mostly, the 12th-ranked Cardinals wanted to show they're a serious contender in the South Division.

Johnson, a Brackenridge product, helped his team make those points, leading the Cardinals to a 78-61victory over the previously unbeaten Buffaloes at the McDermott Center.

Johnson put up 15 points with 12 rebounds and was one of five UIW players scoring in double digits. Shaun Umeh led the Cardinals with 16 points. Tracy Robinson knocked in 14 points, while Eric Stewart (12 points) and Deleon Hines (11 points) did their part.

“We wanted to show what we can do,” Johnson said. “Losing the game at Commerce was a downer for us. Coming back and winning this one was big for us. This sets a big tone for us.”

Aggie Women Rally Together to Knock Off No. 6 Northeastern State, 58-55 - Cameron Sports Information
If the final 18 seconds of a game ever told the story of the game as a whole, the Cameron Aggies women’s basketball team (8-7, 1-0) told quite a tale as they knocked off No. 6 Northeastern State (11-2, 0-1) Wednesday night in Aggie Gym.

After sophomore guard Alexis Williams drained two free throws late in the game to put the team up 58-55, the Aggie women were able to hold the RiverHawks from attempting the game-tying three point shot for 18 seconds with constant pressure and tight defense.

When the buzzer finally sounded, an elated Cameron squad rushed out to the court to celebrate the historic victory.

“In my younger days as a coach, I would’ve gone into that locker room after the game and told the girls to forget about this one and get ready for the next game,” said Head Coach Tom Webb. “But for this one, I’m going to let them enjoy it while I watch tape on the game tonight.”
